This extraordinary journey through Ethiopia begins in the highland capital, Addis Ababa, before venturing southwest into the coffee-rich regions of Jimma and Bonga, where Ethiopia’s ancient coffee heritage comes to life.
The adventure continues deep into remote tribal territories, including Kibish and Omo National Park, where you encounter unique cultures such as the Suri, Nyangatom, Dassanech, and Hamer—each preserving centuries-old traditions.
Traveling north, you explore the terraced landscapes of Konso, the wildlife-rich waters of Lake Chamo, and the cultural highlands around Arba Minch.
Ending back in Addis Ababa, this expedition offers a rare and immersive look into Ethiopia’s cultural diversity, remote landscapes, and living traditions.

Ccontinue your route towards Guraferda and, later, to the town of Coi. You are in the territory of two ethnic groups little known in Ethiopia: the Menit and the Tama. You will reach Dima via a paved road, although before that, they will pass a road on their right that leads directly to the border of South Sudan.
The population of Dima has grown in recent years due to the gold mines in the surrounding area. Gold prospectors from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities come to this town to work hard in the traditional mines or along the Akobo River. They will explore this town and discover all its attractions.
Guraferdda Lodge is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of nature, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, this lodge provides a perfect blend of comfort and adventure. Guests can enjoy cozy accommodations, delicious local cuisine, and a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, bird watching, and star gazing. The friendly staff are dedicated to ensuring a memorable stay, making Guraferdda Lodge an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and exploration.
We continue our journey south, this time heading to the town of Jebba. A few kilometers from Dima, in the direction of Tulgit, we find the turnoff that leads to the Jebba Mountains and the home of the Dizi people. It is in this mountainous region that the Dizi people best preserve their traditions and identity, especially the women, characterized by their traditional hairstyles and facial tattoos. Despite the passage of time, Dizi women have maintained unique tattooing techniques, which we will learn more about during our stay in this fascinating place.
We will leave the village of Jebba, taking a steep track down into the valley that will lead us to the village of Tulgit, in the heart of Suri territory. From there, we will continue our journey to the village of Kibish, where we will set up camp near the river of the same name.
A long day in a 4x4 towards Omo National Park. The first part of the journey takes us through the territory of the Dizi people. Once we reach the village of Tum, the track climbs through mountainous terrain and a dense forest, home to several primate species.
After passing through the village of Adikas, we will begin our descent towards Omo National Park. This park is home to a large population of elephants and buffalo, as well as various species of antelope.
At daybreak we will go on a safari in Omo National Park. Although the park has a large number of mammals and birds, the dense vegetation and the elusive nature of its animals will make them difficult to spot.
We will then continue towards Kangate along a newly built paved road. Kangate, on the banks of the Omo River, is the heart of the Nyangatom people.
The Nyangatom have a clan-based social structure, and in addition to family lineage, their different age groups are given animal names (lion, ostrich, or buffalo, for example) according to their stage of development. This ethnic group relies on livestock, and young people travel long distances to tend to them. Their tribal aesthetic, exemplified by the large necklaces worn by Nyangatom women, is among the most vibrant in the Omo Valley.
We'll get up early to head south towards Omorate, on the banks of the Omo River and in the territory of the Dassanech people. We'll visit some of their villages and meet with some of their leaders who will explain their traditions and culture to us.
The Dassanech people base their subsistence on the cultivation of sorghum and maize. They are considered a pastoral people, but they also practice seasonal farming that coincides with the Omo River's flooding. This ethnic group forms a patriarchal society, where authority rests with a group of elders called Ara.
One of the most striking aspects of the Dassanech people is their men's hairstyles, which mark advancement in the age system; from a completely shaved head to the sophisticated and elaborate hairstyles of adulthood. The Dassanech are animists and base their beliefs on the power of nature and their god, Wago. Rituals are frequent, especially during times of hardship, and often feature their livestock.
From our camp on the banks of the Omo River, we will continue to observe the morning activities of this village and later we will travel to Turmi, territory of the Hamer ethnic group.
We moved to our hotel to freshen up and rest before starting our visits to the Hamer villages in the afternoon.
Day 12
Turmi is the capital of the Hamer ethnic group. With ancestral customs, their own language, religion, and beliefs, the Hamer are incredibly hospitable, with unique rituals, among which we can highlight the ukuli bula or ox-jumping, the boko offering , and the evangadi dance .
The Hamer are, surely, the archetypal ethnic group of the Omo.
The Hamer women's aesthetic is among the most striking in the entire Omo Valley. Their braided hairstyles, impregnated with a paste made from animal fat and reddish earth, are a defining characteristic of this people. They also wear leather skirts and numerous bracelets tightly adorning their arms and legs, which they use as instruments in their dances and rituals. Both women and men practice body scarification.
We'll leave Turmi behind and continue towards Konso, where we will visit one of the villages. Their labyrinthine villages are veritable fortresses, protecting them from neighboring ethnic groups. Located high in the basalt hills, they offer a spectacular vantage point overlooking the surrounding agricultural terraces. The Konso people continue to practice animism, despite decades of Christian influence.
Paradise Turmi Lodge offers a unique blend of comfort and cultural immersion in the heart of the Omo Valley. Nestled among lush landscapes, this lodge provides stunning views and a peaceful retreat. Guests can enjoy spacious accommodations featuring traditional decor, along with modern amenities for a relaxing stay. The lodge also serves delicious local cuisine, allowing visitors to taste authentic flavors of the region. Additionally, guests have the opportunity to explore nearby villages and engage with the vibrant local tribes, making it a memorable experience. With its scenic beauty and rich cultural experiences, Paradise Turmi Lodge is a perfect base for adventure and relaxation.
Early in the morning, we'll head north and venture onto Lake Chamo by boat, the heart of Nechisar National Park. On this unique safari, we'll enjoy observing the diverse wildlife and the activities of the local Gamo fishermen, who continue to use ancestral methods. We'll see hippos and Nile crocodiles, including some of the largest specimens in Africa. This area will also offer opportunities to observe numerous bird species.
Next, we'll head to the Dorze villages. We'll ascend a track that gradually gains altitude, offering incredible views over Nechisar National Park. We'll visit the Dorze people.
It's worth mentioning that the Dorze people's unique houses (made of bamboo canes) form domes up to six meters high and are the hallmark of this ethnic group. Inside, which are quite spacious, they usually have a fire that they use both for cooking and for heating the house.
Discover the serene beauty of Haile Resort in Arba Minch, a perfect getaway for nature lovers. Nestled between stunning landscapes, the resort offers breathtaking views of Lake Chamo and the surrounding hills. Enjoy comfortable accommodations, delicious local cuisine, and a range of activities including boat trips on the lake to spot crocodiles and hippos. Relax by the pool or indulge in a spa treatment to unwind after a day of exploration. Visit nearby attractions like the Nechisar National Park, where you can experience the unique wildlife and vibrant flora. Haile Resort Arba Minch promises an unforgettable experience immersed in nature.
In the morning, we'll have some free time before heading to the airport for our flight to Addis Ababa. In the Ethiopian capital, we'll have a vehicle and guide at our disposal for visits to some of the city's iconic landmarks.
