This unforgettable journey through Ethiopia begins in the vibrant capital, Addis Ababa, where culture, history, and altitude combine to create a fascinating introduction. From there, you fly to the sacred town of Lalibela, home to extraordinary rock-hewn churches and the heart of the spiritual celebration of Timkat.
Your journey continues to Gondar, known as the “Camelot of Africa,” before exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Simien Mountains National Park, where rare wildlife and breathtaking views await. The adventure then leads to the tranquil shores of Lake Tana and the charming town of Bahir Dar.
Ending back in Addis Ababa, this journey blends history, spirituality, culture, and nature into one remarkable Ethiopian experience.
International flight to Addis Ababa. Arrival in the capital in the evening and transfer to the hotel.
A day dedicated to exploring Addis Ababa. Little known to most travelers, who tend to pass it by, Addis Ababa is a fascinating world waiting to be discovered. It's worth noting that this Ethiopian city, at 2,400 meters above sea level, is one of the highest capital cities in the world.
With a growing population and geographically located in the center of the country, Addis Ababa (“new flower” in Amharic, as its founders named it) is a pleasant city full of surprises. We will dedicate the day to visiting the city, whose most emblematic spots are the Piazza district and the ever-chaotic Mesquel Square.
We will visit the Entoto Mountains, where Menelik II settled before founding the city. From these mountains, which reach heights of up to 3,000 meters in some places, we will be able to appreciate the scale of the capital. Afterward, we will discover the secrets of Lucy, one of the most important paleontological discoveries in history, at the National Museum, and, time permitting, we will visit a Christian Orthodox church.
We will return to our hotel to rest.
We will fly to magical Lalibela. Lalibela boasts one of the most important artistic and religious complexes in the world; it is rightly known as the "African Jerusalem." The Lalibela churches were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 and are the main pilgrimage destination for Orthodox Christians. We will visit the first group of rock-hewn churches, including the Church of Medhanialem (Saint Saviour), one of the largest and most impressive, with external colonnades adorning its sides, and the Church of Bete Mariam, a small church that has preserved the beauty of its interior paintings and a curious two-story internal structure.
The churches of Lalibela, being underground, are connected by tunnels and trenches, which are undoubtedly one of the main attractions for visitors. We will dedicate the day to exploring this city in depth, considered one of the wonders of the world. Located at an altitude of 2,630 meters, Lalibela boasts the majesty of its churches, but also the charm of its narrow streets, where we will wander until dinnertime.
In the afternoon, we will also be able to see the preparations for Timkhat
A day in which we will experience firsthand one of the most important festivals of Orthodox Christianity: Timkat.
During the morning, church authorities bless the crowds with holy water in the churches. A major religious festival is celebrated throughout the country, with Lalibela being one of the most special places to experience this grand celebration.
Third day in Lalibela. At daybreak, and provided it is Sunday, we will have the opportunity to witness the spectacular religious ceremonies in the churches. Afterwards, we will visit the Ashete Maryam temple.
In the afternoon, we will continue exploring the rock-hewn churches in the city center. Among the second group of rock-hewn churches, the most notable are the Church of Gabriel-Rufael (characterized by a deep moat), the Church of Amanuel, and the Church of Abba Lebanon. We will also visit the solitary Church of Bete Giorgis, famous for its cruciform floor plan and small interior, where a dome, hidden from view from the outside, stands out. It is probably the most spectacular monolithic church of them all. We will use the ancient tunnels that connect the churches to move from one to another.
After breakfast, we fly from Lalibela to Gondar, once the imperial capital of Ethiopia. Upon arrival, we explore the remarkable Fasil Ghebbi, a UNESCO-listed complex often called the “Camelot of Africa.” This vast site features castles, tunnels, and royal buildings dating back to the 17th century. We also visit King Fasilides’ Pool, a historic and ceremonial site surrounded by ancient walls. The day concludes at the beautifully decorated Debre Birhan Selassie Church, famous for its ceiling of angelic faces.
Today we journey to the breathtaking Simien Mountains National Park via the town of Debark. After meeting local guides and scouts, we begin our exploration of this dramatic landscape of cliffs and peaks. Along the way, we encounter troops of gelada monkeys, unique to Ethiopia and known for their striking red chests. With some luck, we may also spot rare wildlife such as the Walia ibex or Ethiopian wolf. After a short hike and scenic views, we return to Gondar for the evening.
We travel by road to Bahir Dar, located on the shores of Lake Tana. The day is dedicated to exploring the lake’s historic island monasteries, many rich in ancient art and religious treasures. We take a boat ride to the Zege Peninsula to visit the famous Ura Kidane Mehret Church, surrounded by lush forest. Depending on time, we may visit additional monasteries such as Azuwa Maryam. In the afternoon, we enjoy a walk through Bahir Dar’s local markets and scenic lakeside viewpoints.
