The West and the North

This area is on the western coast from Galway north to Ballyliffin– which is not quite the top of Ireland but you can see it from here.

Dublin

Most of the golf on the east coast of Ireland is in the Dublin area. Playing golf while enjoying Ireland’s largest and most cosmopolitan city makes for a great segment to add to any trip.

The Northern Ireland cousres dot the coast from Portrush to Ardglass. Here you find the two top-rated courses in all of Ireland–Royal Portrush and Royal County Down–along with Castlerock, Portstewart and Ardglass.

The Rosapenna Golf Resort acquired the St Patrick’s Links in late 2012, a former 36-hole facility developed by the Walsh Family of Carrigart. The Maheramagorgan Links designed by Irish architect Eddie Hackett and the Trá Mór Links designed by PGA Professional Joanne O’Haire, both opened for play in the mid-1990’s.

Discussions ensued with Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design, with Tom finalizing his lay-out with lead associate Eric Iverson in March 2013. The St Patrick's Links is routed in the adjoining dune system just south of the existing two courses at Rosapenna. Originally encompassing 36 holes, Tom has fashioned 18 unrecognisable and unforgettable holes over the same tract of land. The result? A sprawling links that is destined to become a modern great. It sits on the most magnificent piece of links land - huge scale, west coast of Ireland scenery, with enough variety in dimension to present a real diversity of golf holes. The routing takes golfers on a journey through huge dunes, to high above Sheephaven Bay, along the coast, then back over some more gentle dunes... and that's just the front nine! With plenty of width and an eclectic mix of naturalised bunkers, the course is unlike anything in the UK & Ireland... or anywhere else for that matter.

An intimate group of founding members including Frank & John Casey of the Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort and architect Tom Doak have funded the construction of the new 18-hole course in a partnership between The Casey Family who have owned & operated Rosapenna for over four decades & Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design. Construction began in April 2018, with all of the greens completed in 2019 to ensure that they are matured and at their best from opening day. Notwithstanding the Covid-19 pandemic, all of the finishing touches were carried-out in 2020.

The outstanding Championship Strand Course was the host for the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. Jon Rahm, the 2017 Winner was certainly impressed, “the golf course is amazing. It’s probably one of the most beautiful golf courses I have ever seen, if not the most”.

Ballyliffin Golf Club is a 36 hole complex located about as far north as you can go in Ireland. The north of Ireland is a collection of very small towns, such as Ballyliffin, that have a population that swells in the summer as the Irish flock to their Holiday Homes in this scenic and idyllic part of the country.

Ballyliffin Golf Club consists of two outstanding, contrasting links courses and 36 wonderful holes, making up one of the finest golf resorts to be found anywhere in the world. The new Glashedy Links is a Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock masterpiece fashioned around the incredible dunes, and is rated amongst the best links tracks in the world. Ruddy cherishes Glashedy as his own and has returned in recent years to fine tune the stunning bunkering of this magnificient links. Craddock and Ruddy are also credited with much of the improvement carried out to The Old Links in the course of constructing The Glashedy Links.

Offering views of the Atlantic from 16 of 18 holes, the newly redesigned golf course at Trump International Golf Links Ireland is a stunning sight to behold. 

 The par-72 layout features a single loop of nine holes out and nine back, playing 7,026 yards from the back tees. 

Designed with the philosophy of ‘least disturbance', the most natural route was taken in laying the course out through the sand dunes. As a result, the golf course in Ireland has a unusual combination of five par 3s and five par 5s. The speed and direction of the wind cause consistent daily variations in play. 

Devastating storm in 2014 when the signature hole fell into the ocean--precipitated a total remodel by the very famous Martin Hawtree design.
