This 12-day photographic journey through Japan is a carefully crafted experience that takes you from the wild, frozen landscapes of Hokkaido to the cultural heart of central Japan. In the north, we focus on some of the country’s most iconic wildlife encounters, photographing the elegant red-crowned cranes in the snow, whooper swans gathering in icy wetlands, and the powerful Steller’s sea eagles as they move across the winter coastline. These early mornings in pristine conditions offer incredible opportunities for dramatic light, action, and atmospheric wildlife imagery, set against some of Japan’s most untouched environments.
From there, the journey continues south into the Japanese Alps, where we explore the serene landscapes of Biei before arriving in Nagano. Here we photograph the world-famous Japanese macaques at Jigokudani Monkey Park as they bathe in natural hot springs surrounded by snow and rising steam. We also visit the striking Matsumoto Castle and nearby historic villages, capturing the blend of samurai-era architecture and timeless rural Japan. Throughout the journey, expect a balance of wildlife, landscapes, and culture, with a strong focus on light, composition, and storytelling in some of Japan’s most photogenic locations.
