We’d hate to start this blog post in a cheesy way, but we’re going to do it anyway. You know that quote? The one about travel and the world? You know, the one by Saint Augustine that says, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” Well, we at Wetravel think it’s one of the more inspirational quotes about travel and we happen to take this quote to heart.
We think there’s no better way to learn more about the world and to grow as an individual than to travel the world. After all, we pretty much talk about it all the time (as evident here, here, and here). But the only reason we mention it in almost all of our blog posts is because we wholeheartedly believe that this is true. We at Wetravel constantly seek to be interested in and educated about the world, the people, and the different perspectives in it. We’re looking at the world and thinking about all the places that we haven’t been to, all the things we haven’t done, all the people we haven’t met, and all the experiences that we haven’t had yet. We’re hoping and trying to absorb and do as much as we can and we think that travel allows us to do all this.
To Wetravel, travel is a way to open your mind, eyes, ears, tastes, and souls. It awakens something in us that leads us to explore. At first, it’s a little bit scary, but after a while, it can be exciting and allow you to get out of your comfort zone. Eventually, you become well-versed in a language, culture, or a way of doing things. And in this way, we’re all kind of like students of the world.
Students are curious about a wide variety of things and they’re constantly interested in learning all that there is to know. At first, they don’t know everything and it takes time for them to become accustomed to approaches, rules, and processes. But after a while, they eventually become extremely knowledgable and they develop into experts. And that’s how we at Wetravel feel about travel. It’s daunting to be in an unfamiliar place with people you don’t know and verbal communication is in a language that you don’t speak. While this can be terrifying at first, we also think it gives you a chance to gain a better understanding and to learn more. Not everyone in the world will be exactly the same as you. In fact, most people won’t. But traveling gives you the opportunity to meet and interact with these people in situations that cause you slight discomfort, but also challenge you to rethink the world and your place in it. The world is huge and while this is slightly frightening, it’s also amazing. By traveling, we learn more about different ways of life and customs. We taste foods that have been made for centuries, but just not in our hometowns. We get to speak languages that are similar, yet slightly different from our own. There are so many things to learn and experience! How can you not call yourself a student of the world with all this wonder and amazement?
Sure, some would argue that you can’t experience everything that the world has to offer. But we at Wetravel would like to say, “Well, why not still try?” There’s really no harm in trying to experience as much as you can in the world. People say the world is your oyster or the world is a book. Well, the world is a whole lot of things to a lot of different people! So, why not try and figure out what it and travel mean to you?
