Currently, 4,000 hectares of flowers are cultivated in Ecuador, about 2,500 are roses. Ecuador is the first exporter of fresh cut roses in the world. It is one of the largest industries that generates work and foreign exchange for the country.

Ecuador has the best climate and soil for rose production. The plantations are generally irrigated with water that comes from volcanoes or natural springs. Visiting a rose plantation will make us understand the entire process and work that this industry entails. Many people are involved from the beginning to the end of the export chain. Above all, women are an active part of this production chain.

Itinerary:

Pick-up from the Quito hotel. To continue driving north of the city and cross over different towns and ecosystems. 

Visiting the Rosa Plantation: 

Our first stop will be in Tabacundo. The nickname of this town is the “Rose Capital of Ecuador”. An expert plantation worker will help us with the tour and explanation of the cultivation of roses. We will be able to visit the different sections of roses. Soil preparation, care, cutting and packaging. Cold storage room and transportation to finally be exported to different countries.

Otavalo Market exploration: 

Continuing to the Otavalo market, we will cross different inter-Andean valleys. Upon entering the province of Imbabura we will observe the beautiful Taita Imbabura volcano. We stop in a view point to contemplate the largest lake in Ecuador. Upon arriving at the market, we will have free time to talk with the indigenous and mestizo vendors in the market. Shopping will be the next step. Not without first forgetting to bargain with the sellers.

Volcanic Lake:
