About this trip

Mount Kilimanjaro /  Standing Tall At - 19,341 feet.

The 8 day Kilimanjaro trekking via lemosho route is one of our most popular and rewarding experience. The 8 days Kilimanjaro trek to the “Roof of Africa".  Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and also the highest free-standing mountain in the world.  It has many trails, however Lemosho Route is our preferred route. Itinerary

14 Day Mt. Kilimanjaro
Mt. Kilimanjaro climb via Lemosho route

-KILIMANJARO EQUIPMENT PACK-LIST

YOUR DAILY ROUTINE ON THE MOUNTAIN

DAY 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa

Elevation:  7,742ft - 9,498ft

Distance: 4 miles

Hiking time: 3-4 hrs

Habitat: Rain forest

We depart Arusha for Londorossi Gate, roughly a 4-hour drive, where you will complete the entry formalities. We will then drive to the Lemosho trailhead and upon arrival, we will begin the hike through undisturbed forest which winds its way to the first campsite. Keep your eyes peeled for the blue monkeys swinging through the trees!

DAY 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation:  9,498ft - 11,500ft

Distance: 5 miles

Hiking time: 4-5 hrs

Habitat: Heath

We continue on the trail leading out of the rainforest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards. As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 Camp. Here we catch our first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.

DAY 3: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut

Elevation: 11,500ft - 13,800ft

Distance: 7 miles

Hiking time: 5-7 hrs

Habitat: Heath

Today, we will spend the full day exploring the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth. It is a gentle walk east on moorland meadows towards Shira 2 Camp. We then divert from the main trail to Moir Hut, a lesser-used camping site at the base of the Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity.

DAY 4: Moir Hut to Lava Tower

Elevation: 13,800ft - 15,190ft

Distance:  4 miles

Hiking time: 4-5 hrs

Habitat: Alpine desert

Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 15,190ft - 13,044ft

Distance: 2 miles

Hiking time: 2-3 hrs

Habitat: Alpine desert

We begin the day climbing up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft tall volcanic rock formation. We descend down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft. Although you begin and end the day at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude is extremely beneficial for acclimatization.

DAY 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 13,044ft - 3,106ft

Distance:  3 miles

Hiking time: 4-5 hrs

Habitat: Alpine desert

We begin the day by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. We will then climb the non-technical but steep, nearly 900ft, cliff. The Barranco Wall, also known as the Kissing Wall, is approximately 3 ft. wide. This narrow section is famous because climbers often place a kiss on the rock as they pass by. Climbers also “hug” the outcrop and breathe a sigh of relief on the other side as they realize it wasn’t nearly as intimidating as it looked.

From the top of the Barranco Wall, we cross a series of hills and valleys until we descend sharply into Karanga Valley. One more steep climb up leads us to Karanga Camp. This shorter day will prepare us for higher elevation at the summit.

DAY 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation:  3,106ft - 15,331ft

Distance: 2 miles

Hiking time: 3-4 hrs

Habitat: Alpine desert

We leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are visible from this position.

DAY 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak

Elevation:  15,331ft - 19,341ft

Distance:  3 miles

Hiking time: 7-8 hrs

Habitat: Arctic

Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation:  19,341ft - 10,065ft

Distance: 7 miles

Hiking time: 4-6 hrs

Habitat: Rain forest

Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At this elevation and time of day, the wind and cold can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent but short breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak.

Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak— the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Here, you can take a moment to reflect on your tremendous accomplishment. You’ll obviously have the opportunity to take a few pictures from the ‘Rooftop of Africa’ to memorialize this special moment.

From the summit, we now make our descent continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, stopping at Barafu for lunch. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

DAY 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation:  10,065ft - 5,380ft

Distance:  6 miles

Hiking time: 3-4 hrs

Habitat: Rain forest

On our last day, we continue the descent to Mweka Gate where we will be met by our driver who will transport us back to the hotel in Moshi/Arusha for shower. Here, we can relax with some refreshments, perhaps a local Kilimanjaro beer, while we wait to receive our summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel in the hotel for a long overdue hot shower.

DAY 10 - 11: Tarangire National Park.

The entire experience was amazing! I cannot thank Good Earth Expeditions enough for a safe and rewarding trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. All of the Guides and porters are so kind and friendly. Good Earth also gave us an unforgettable and incredible Safari through Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Parks. What an experience! I cannot recommend them enough.

The trip was magical for our family of four with two teens that joined a larger group that had just climbed Kilimanjaro. This trip should be at the top of everyone’s list. We saw the big five and many other animals, often very close to our safari trucks, including lions and elephants. The scenery and wildlife often left us stunned. The animals were often so close that all we needed was our iPhones to get crisp amazing pics. Our drivers were extremely dedicated and professional and Consea had a sharp eye and lots of knowledge, so we also saw a cheetah and leopard. Every place we stayed was amazing for service and often for scenery. At Burungi Lodge we had breakfast as more than 20 elephants gathered nearby in view from our deck, under a glowing sunrise. It was jaw-dropping. Safaris in Tarangire and Ngorongoro crater were out of this world, but every safari day was great. The road dust in the Serengeti was the only challenge, but it cannot be avoided, and seeing about a dozen lions on our first day of Safari there definitely made up for that. After several days of Safari trips, we also visited tribes, another profound experience. We also toured the farms, town and market of Mto Wa Mbu, also unforgettable. This is the best trip of our lifetime so far and the only comparison I can think of is the Galapagos islands, something my wife and I were also lucky to experience about 20 years ago. There, we were also mesmerized by the close-up wildlife, but the islands lacked the deep cultural experience that we have had here in Tanzania.

I could not have dreamed up a better experience. Tumaini and Abby were incredible guides on the mountain. I ended up getting sick for two of the days and I felt incredibly safe and well taken care of. They asked the right questions to ensure my safety and did not stress me out any more than needed. I can honestly say I would not have made it to the top without their knowledge, confidence, and comfort. The chef, Jared cooked three INCREDIBLE meals per day. When I say incredible, I'm talking fried chicken with fries and pizza with fresh veggies. There was a delicious soup at each meal that became out favorite. The views through the whole lemosho route were stunning and fun to see so much as you are changing climates. The porters were incredibly kind and STRONG! Our safari guide, Assa was extremely knowledgeable. He knew everything we wanted to learn and more. During a two-day safari we were able to see the big 5! Incredible experience. Nothing like seeing a lion proudly walk down the path after making two kills... We felt well taken care of by Davine and she quickly became family. She has a beautiful heart and is very knowledgeable and nice to talk to. I went looking for a life changing experience in Tanzania and found that and more. I highly recommend GoodEarth.

Oh Tanzania you stole our hearts. Trip of a lifetime. We climbed Kilimanjaro, went on a 3 day safari, and spent 5 days on Zanzibar. Every minute of the trip exceeded our expectations. The Good Earth Staff left nothing to chance, every detail was planned to perfection! Devine our coordinator was incredible. Very responsive 24/7. From airport transfers, to dinners out, to taking care of our laundry on a Sunday… She did it all. Our Guides (Tumaini, Abby, and Iisha) were simply amazing. Our experience and safety was always their main concern. Thank you so much for sharing your country and culture with us. And the porters on the climb! Wow, what a group of friendly hardworking people. It was a honor to spend a week with each of them. I cannot recommend Good Earth enough. Do not hesitate using this operation for your Tanzania adventure. We will cherish our memories always.

This trip was a life-changing experience. Trekking the mountain gorillas and being in their presence was magical. The accommodations were beautiful and all of the people we interacted with were genuinely kind, welcoming, and caring. The hike up Mount Kilimanjaro was also life-changing — so much beauty, so much effort, so much reward. We felt cared for and safe the whole time and absolutely loved our team. It was a most excellent travel adventure and experience!
