Cartagena is a coastal city and one of the major ports of Colombia situated in the Caribbean Sea. The city has been an important link on the historical and exploration route to the West Indies. The region has been inhabited since 4000 BC as per the ceramics and remains found by archaeologists. The city has a unique scenery to watch; contrary to many historic sites and cities around the world, the walled city of Cartagena is well preserved to its original state. Besides site-seeing, the dining experience and the city's nightlife are major attractions for new travelers. Barrio Getsemani, beaches of Islas del Rosario, Cartagena's Cathedral, Tunnels of Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, and free street performances are fun activities that you must not miss. The downtown has a variety of architecture, mainly dominated by the colonial style of construction and the republican and Italian styles of architecture.

Palenque / Walled City Tour
After breakfast, we will travel to Palenque. Palenque is about a 2 hour drive from the city.

Palenque was founded in the 16th century – the exact date remains unknown – by Benkos Biohó, a former African king from either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Angola, who was sold into slavery and escaped the slave port of Cartagena in 1599.

This tour will give you a better view of the history of slavery in Columbia and Latin America. You will observe a community with their own language (Palenquero), dance, history, cuisine, political organization and social structure.

After our visit to Palenque, we will receive a tour of the Walled City.

Free Day - for those not visiting Palenque.

Rosario Island / Chiva Bus
After breakfast, we will set out for the Rosario Islands. We will spend the day swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the water.

If time permits, we may also stop at Cholon, a party island. Here is where you will enjoy a mini party in the water with music, drinks (alcoholic drinks are not included) and people from other boats that arrive.

Later, we will have lunch.

After returning from Rosario Island we will return to our host hotel.

We will meet later to experience the Chivas bus in Cartagena.

This was my first time traveling solo in a group trip! I was so nervous about it but quickly went away once I met the host Tarsha and the group. I had a wonderful experience! The trip accommodations, food, and activities were absolutely fantastic. Will definitely travel with this travel company again and I highly recommend! It was a small, intimate group. We bonded quickly and did just about everything together as we discovered what charms Greece had to offer. Great upscale accommodation choices and activities! I would travel with Tarsha again in a heartbeat.
