is a comprehensive discovery of African Culture that will explore Senegal, The Gambia and Ghana, West Africa. The initial part of KATLIE'S CALL TO THE MOTHERLAND will start in Dakar, Senegal and Banjul, The Gambia, in conjunction with The African Cultural Exchange and The African Cultural Discovery Mission (ACDM) 2026 in a comprehensive and immersive cultural experience designed to offer participants a deep understanding of the cultural, educational, health, and social aspects of life in Senegal and The Gambia, West Africa. Following this portion of the program, the group will then move on to the Gold Coast-Accra, Ghana.

Here are some key highlights of initial part of the program:

1.     Cultural Discovery Mission: Participants will engage in a journey to understand the diverse ways of life in Senegal and The Gambia, focusing on developmental, educational, and healthcare issues.

2.     Family Cultural Exploration: The program places emphasis on exploring and discovering the intricacies of village family life, providing a personal and intimate perspective on local customs and traditions.

3.     Professional Interaction: Participants will have the opportunity to interact with their professional counterparts, fostering cross-cultural exchange and learning.

4.     Healthcare Systems: A unique aspect of the program is the exploration of healthcare systems in both Francophone Senegal and English-speaking The Gambia, offering insights into the challenges and innovations in these regions.

5.     Community Engagement: Participants will work alongside villagers in their daily activities, gaining hands-on experience and understanding of local livelihoods.

6.     Educational Contribution: There is an opportunity to teach in village nursery, primary, or middle schools, allowing participants to contribute meaningfully to the local education system.

7.     Cultural Sites Exploration: The program includes visits to significant cultural and historical sites such as Jufure Village, the ancestral home of Kunta Kinte from "Roots," and the Gorée Island Slave Trading Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Africa Cultural Discovery Mission (ACDM) 2026 is an introductory cross-cultural program designed for individuals interested in learning about the culture, history, and daily life of West African nations, specifically Senegal and The Gambia. The mission is organized by The African Cultural Exchange and aims to foster professional and personal partnerships between participants and their local counterparts in fields such as teaching, family life, and healthcare.

Essential features include:

• Partnership-Based Learning: Participants are paired with local professionals or families in their chosen area of interest, allowing for immersive, hands-on cultural exchange and mutual learning1.

• In-Depth Exploration: The program provides opportunities to visit villages, engage in counterpart discussions, and participate in educational or health-related activities, giving a nuanced understanding of local developmental, educational, and healthcare issues1.

• Cultural and Historical Education: Visits to significant sites like Goree Island (a UNESCO World Heritage site and former slave trading post) and Juffure village (the ancestral home of Kunta Kinte) are included to deepen participants' awareness of West Africa's cultural heritage1.

• Long-Term Impact: The mission is designed to promote ongoing relationships, supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 17 (SDG-17) for Global Partnerships, which encourages cross-cultural connections for sustainable development and problem-solving1.

• Professional Development: Participants gain insights and experience that can inform their own work and academic growth, while also contributing to the communities they visit through teaching, health care, and collaborative projects1.

In summary, the West Africa Cultural Discovery Mission is a structured exploration and partnership program that introduces participants to the vibrant cultures, challenges, and opportunities of West Africa, with an emphasis on mutual benefit, sustainable development, and global citizenship

Passports should be valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of the trip (Should not expire before May 2027).  Please upload a copy of your passport picture page as a part of the registration. 

A packing list will be provided.  You should plan to have light-weight clothing for temperatures in the 80 degree range with a light-weight jacket for cool spells.  You should plan to pack 1 checked bag under 50 lbs, with one carry-on bag and a personal bag.

A language lesson sheet will be provided with several greetings and phrases that you can utilize to assist in cultural immersion. 

The trip is fully refundable up until 3 months prior to departure (August 2026).  After that time partial refunds may be available. 

An electronic medical briefing will be provided.   Each participant is required to obtain malaria prophylaxis (pills) and a travel medical evaluation with Yellow Fever vaccination are required.  

At the end of the booking you will be asked to sign an ACE Participation agreement outlining some cross-cultural and safety considerations for international travel. 

An online Orientation Briefing will be provided several weeks prior to travel to acquaint the participant with many of the issues surrounding our travel in West Africa, including safety, food and cultural issues to name a few.
