On this morning, we fly to Zanzibar and transfer to our hotel in Stone Town.
The archipelago of Zanzibar consists of Zanzibar and Pemba Islands and several islets. There are 96 km (60 miles) of length and 32 km (20 miles) of width on Zanzibar Island. It's about 1040 km sq. As the only functioning ancient city in East Africa, Stone Town is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and fringing coral reefs.
Its people are a fascinating mixture of ethnicities, as indicated by Zanzibar's colorful history. Most Zanzibaris practice Islam, although Christianity and Hinduism are also practiced. Zanzibar City, which has approximately 100,000 residents, is estimated to have a population of 800,000. Swahili (known locally as Kiswahili) is spoken extensively in East Africa by Zanzibaris. There's a lot of belief that Zanzibar is where the language was born in its purest form.
In the afternoon, we will undertake a walking tour of Stone Town, the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, which has hardly changed in the past 200 years. The town is characterized by winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques, and grand Arab houses whose original owners competed over the extravagance of their residences. Brass-studded, carved wooden doors exhibit this one-upmanship, with as many as 500 different examples. As part of our tour, we will visit the House of Wonders, the Museum of the Palace (People's Palace), the old slave market, the Arab Fort, and the Hamamni Persian Baths. Several excellent gift shops in Stone Town can offer a wide range of souvenirs and handicrafts.
Note: Our Zanzibar sightseeing itinerary may vary depending on weather conditions and other logistical considerations.
