About this trip

This program is ideal for those who want to get off the beaten path and enjoy the pristine nature of the patagonian fjords. Come explore our estancia with an experienced local guide and share stories, wine and regional foods while marveling at the untouched corners of this part of the world.

Our multi-day guests enjoy a stay in our newly renovated countryside cabin known as “La Barrosa.” This quaint off the grid getaway is located 8km from the main estancia houses and comes with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room and kitchen area.  This experience is sold as a full board package that includes your own private guide, all trekking and horseback activities, meals, beverages and transportation to and from the estancia via boat. This is the ultimate opportunity to disconnect from the world as La Barrosa has no internet or phone reception.

General Itinerary

Your program begins with a shared 40 minute navigation through the Last Hope Fjord to Estancia la Peninsula where you will be welcomed to the main house with a light breakfast. You will discuss your personalized schedule with your guide depending on if you are doing trekking, horseback riding or just want to go straight to the barrosa cabin to relax or do shorter activities. The schedule is quite flexible depending on the weather and your personal physical abilities. The day’s activities could last for as little as one hour or as much as six, and we have routes made for all levels of fitness. Once your plan is made bigger luggage will be loaded into the truck to be driven to the cabin and you will take your day items with you (such as layers, sunblock, camera etc.).

At some point during your Barrosa adventure you will join up with our full day tour for lunch at the main estancia house to eat a traditional Patagonian lamb barbeque. Afterwards you will enjoy a demonstration of how our sheep dogs work and see one of our gauchos shear a sheep in our barn.

Bed Arrangements

The cabin has two rooms each with a private bathroom and the following bed arrangements:

– 1 room with a double bed (which can also be separated into two twin beds)
– 1 room with twin beds and the possibility to add another bed as a bunk bed.
* It is possible to have both rooms with double beds, but we recommend you check with us before booking.

For larger groups, there can be tents set up by the house, being able to use the bathrooms and dining room makes everything easier, some of you still can use the rooms in the house.

Food & Beverages

All meals are provided for the duration of your stay and we are able to accommodate for any restrictions if advised ahead of time. Dinner will consist of a light starter, main dish and dessert. Breakfast has an array of items such as fruit, eggs, yogurt, granola, local bread and jams, fruit juice and of course locally roasted coffee. On one of the days lunch will be a pack lunch of sandwiches, fruit and trail mix and on the other day it will be a lamb barbeque meal at the main estancia house. Beverages include a variety of Chilean red and white wines, local beers, locally distilled gin, whisky and pisco for those who want to try a Chilean spirit. We do not offer sodas. Please feel free to bring any additional beverages you may like that you do not see listed.  We do not supply plastic water bottles, you must bring your own reusable bottle to fill up with our fresh non-treated mountain water.

How to get there

MacLean Dock at Puerto Bories

https://estanciaspatagonia.com/meeting-point/

Day 1 starts at 09.00 AM at our dock dock located 10 minutes outside of Puerto Natales in Puerto Bories (see meeting point). We advise you to sleep in Puerto Natales before and after your visit to the estancia so you do not have any transportation issues. Do not plan to come back from the estancia and go straight to the airport. Please plan your flight out for at least one day after your visit.

Plan B - Weather Cancellation

Patagonia is famous for its strong winds which could cancel our Full Day tour if the captain says the fjord is too windy for the navigation. In that case we have a Plan B for our multi-day adventures. Guests will cross the channel in a local boat in front of Puerto Natales where it is much more protected than the open fjord. From there an off road truck will be waiting to bring you along the coast to the estancia. This could also be the case if the Full Day tour is canceled for your day leaving the estancia, hence why we advise not to book your flight out on the same day.

Cancellation Policy

Private Program reservations cancelled more than 60 days in advance will be fully refunded (100%). If the cancellation occurs between 30 and 59 days, a 50% refund will be given. However, if the reservation is cancelled less than 30 days before, no refund will be provided.

Unforgettable!! This was the highlight of our time in Patagonia. Every moment exceeded our expectations. From the boat ride, to the lamb roast, seeing and learning the history of the family and the Estancia and seeing the incredible place when we arrived was astounding. Riding (beautiful white horses) out to the the house where we were treated to incredible meals by Jessica and Thomas, horse riding to the tops of hills, waterfalls, foxglove laden forests, even in the ocean and then plenty of time for games and family discussions. So quiet and serene. The MacLean family is so generous and welcoming. Every detail seems to have been considered, the staff were all professional, but still felt genuinely Patagonian. We would return in a heartbeat.

Our guide, Liam and his father, a gaucho at Estancia, and all the staff, including Maria Elena, who I hiked with, provided an excellent bilingual informative day at the Estancia with a delicious lunch and wine. The dogs, including Barbuchos Negra, the 9-year old, and Pyrenees, Coca, are the sweetest, hardest working dogs I've ever met. Gracias.

Great trip, perfectly organized and with a high quality among the whole day. Small group which makes the whole experience very authentic, great guide and very welcoming hosts. Amazing food and plenty of wine & drinks the whole day. Muchas gracias.

Thank you very much Estancias Patagonia !! My fiancee and I had a day / experience we will cherish for life... Sierra Baguales is a breathtaking place, PRISTINE and isolated, that transports you out of this world... exceeding the Scottish highlands. Incredible rock formations in the mountains surrounding their valleys, grasslands, marshlands and a number of (tiny to significant) courses of pure ice melted water. You can also find yourself in front of 40+ million year fossils to make your mind wander... The Estancia La Cumbre, where our horseback ride took place, is wonderfully run for the enjoyment of all visitors. Ever present Ian, the Estancia owner, guiding out group, engaging and warm with Patagonian hospitality, making sure everyone in his team is performing accordingly. Nicolás ("Nicky") Lopez, our horseride guide, took excellent care of every detail. My fiancee was a newbie with the horses, and we (both her and I) felt she was handled with all the possible care all the time in our multi-hour excursion. KUDOS to both and to the rest of the team !! Thank you all. My fiancee and I had a long conversation, a sort of wrap-up of our exhilarating trip to Chilean Patagonia, in which we: visited Parque Nacional Torres del Paine (8th Natural Wonder of the World), sailed in a catamaran through fiords to reach glaciers, hiked through forests of indigenous trees, rode on 8x8 truck that took us to mountain peaks... everything amazing. However, our horseback ride in Sierra Baguales was the pinnacle of our trip, the true moment of communion with nature, of total disconnection with the rest of the world, complete immersion in our here and now !! This is a humble message to any potential visitor coming from all corners of the world: YOU CANNOT miss visiting Sierra Baguales with the team of Estancias Patagonia.
