About this trip

This 3 day trek from Antigua to Lake Atitlan is a unique and adventurous  way to explore the Mayan highlands. You will hike through dense cloud forests, coffee fields, enjoy local hospitality and camp under starry skies far from the noise of the city. Each day offers a new landscape, from misty ridgelines with volcano views to remote indigenous villages and panoramic lookouts over Lake Atitlán. During the 3 day trek from Antigua to Lake Atitlan you will cover a distance of approximately 43 kms (26.7 miles). This trekking adventure is perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and travelers seeking a deeper connection to Guatemala’s natural beauty and cultural roots.

Río Xaya Trek

Start this 3 day trek from Antigua to Lake Atitlan by traveling to a village outside Antigua. This day  begins with a visit to the shrine of Maximón (a Mayan deity) before heading to the trailhead. The day’s hike winds through coffee plantations and small villages, descends into the Rio Xaya canyon, and then climbs to a remote highland community with stunning views of Acatenango and Fuego volcanoes. A warm welcome and hearty dinner await at the campsite.

Elevation Gain/Loss: ~ +1,390 mtrs / -1,439 mtrs

Day 2

Highline Ridge Trek

After breakfast, you’ll ascend to a scenic ridgeline with views stretching from the Antigua Valley to the Pacific Coast. The trail undulates before descending into small villages. A short local “flete” ride (or optional walk) brings you to our final campsite overlooking Lake Atitlán. Enjoy a weaving demonstration, tortilla-making, and a local-style dinner.

Elevation Gain/Loss: ~ +746 mtrs / -636 mtrs

Day 3

Madre Vieja Trek

On the last day of this 3 day trek from Antigua to Lake Atitlan, you’ll descend into the Madre Vieja canyon, passing farms and small villages. A visit to a local coffee farm offers insight into traditional coffee production. After lunch atop the final ridge, you’ll begin the last descent toward San Antonio Palopó, with sweeping views of Lake Atitlán to end the journey.

Elevation Gain/Loss: ~ +609 mtrs / -1,543 mtrs
