Arrive Delhi

Welcome to Delhi, the intriguing cultural and historical centre of India’s past and future, built over 450 years by a succession of empires - first the Hindu and Muslim dynasties, followed by the powerful Mughal dynasty who ruled until the British took over. Delhi offers its visitors glimpses of the stupendous power and wealth of its past. Where even the most modern parts of the city retain their distinctly Indian identity, here you will find a model of the latest car cruising through the streets and at the busiest intersection you will find a herd of doe-eyed cows oblivious to the traffic! It is in Delhi that a Mercedes Benz and a cycle rickshaw co-exist in the same neighborhood. In keeping with this Old and New Delhi are so different from each other but yet one complements the other!

Upon arrival you will be met and escorted to your hotel.

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2 image

Delhi

Breakfast at the hotel.

This morning you will enjoy a panoramic tour of Old Delhi popularly known as “The Walled City ‘was once the capital of Muslim India between the 17th and 19th centuries. Today it still contains its fabled, colorful bazaars and a myriad of narrow streets, of which Chandni Chowk, with its never-ending but ever fascinating chaos remains the most famous. The imposing Jama Masjid, the great mosque of Old Delhi, with its onionshaped dome and characteristically Mughal architecture, and the magnificent Red Fort, an eternal symbol of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan’s power and style, are among the main attractions of Old Delhi.

In sharp comparison the architecture of New Delhi or "Lutyen's Delhi" commissioned in 1911 and inaugurated as recently as 1931 is a combination of British and Indian styles and this whole area of Delhi is magnificently planned.  At one end of the avenue known as the Rajpath (literally the “King’s Way”) is the War Memorial Arch, better known as India Gate, a memorial to the 90,000 Indians who gave their lives in World War I. At the other end stands the Rashtrapati Bhavan, one of the largest and most grandiose of the Raj constructions, built originally for the British Viceroy and now the official residence of the President of India

Visit Humayun's Tomb, Emperor Humayun, the father of Emperor Akbar, lies buried in this magnificent monument built in red sandstone. Haji Begum, Humayun's first wife and mother of Emperor Akbar designed and supervised the entire construction.

Marvel at the Qutab Minar, India's tallest stone tower. At a height of 234 feet, the "Tower of Victory" is considered by some to be the world's most perfect specimen of tower architecture. A mathematical marvel, this building has remained standing for nine centuries.

Delhi - Agra - Delhi

Breakfast at the hotel.

This morning you will be transferred to the Nizamuddin Railway Station for your train – Gatiman Express to Agra (0810/0950 Hours).

Upon arrival Agra, meeting & assistance and proceed for your city tour.

Agra, the capital to the Mughals in the 16th and 17th Centuries. Agra was also the repository of many of the Mughals most famous monuments. The city has long astonished visitors and many places of interest date back to the Afghans, who predated the Mughals.

You will visit the Agra Fort. Set on the bend of the River Yamuna. Emperor Akbar built it as his citadel over the years 1565-1573. This magnificent fort, with its imposing gates, walls of red sandstone and moat, dominates the center of the city. The fort was built by three different Mughal Emperors: Akbar the Great erected the walls, gates and first buildings; Emperor Shah Jehan built the impressive imperial quarters and mosque; while Emperor Aurangzeb added the outer ramparts. A visit to the Hall of Public Audience and the Royal Pavilions is a must! At the end of his life, Aurangzeb imprisoned his father, Shah Jehan, at Agra Fort — a mild punishment considering the luxury of the fort. Legend states that Shah Jehan died in Muasamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony with an excellent view of the Taj Mahal.

Lunch at a local restaurant (on direct payment basis)

Afternoon visit the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is everything that has been said about it and more. Visitors are asked to remove their shoes prior to entering the interiors of the Taj Mahal.

Taking 22 years and 20,000 men to build, the white marble was quarried 200 miles away and was transported to the site by a fleet of 1000 elephants! Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal (literally translated as Jewel of the Palace). She died at the age of 39 giving birth to her fourteenth child and he went into mourning for two years, turning away from the business of running an empire and becoming more involved with his other great love – architecture! Feast your eyes on the exquisite intricate marble inlay work!  Legend has it that the cenotaphs were inlaid with diamonds. A blanket woven of pearls covered Mumtaz’s shroud. A railing of gold circled the cenotaphs, which was later on replaced by a marble one. Gold leaf was said to have covered all or part of the dome.

Later this afternoon, in time transfer to the railway station for your train – Gatiman Express back to Delhi (1745/1930 Hours).

There is an inscription on a pillar near the main shrine stating that in 1439 Deepaka, an architect constructed the temple at the direction of Dharanka, a devoted Jain. Morning proceed to the Gateway of India, where you will board the ferry for a cruise to the serene and densely forested Elephanta Island (Closed on Mondays) where the caves are located (travel time by ferry depending on the tide will be 1 – 1 ½ Hours approximately one way). Over 1,000 years ago Hindu craftsmen excavated caves in the volcanic rock high up on the slope, depicting their beliefs in massive carvings of exceptional elegance. The Elephanta Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, was probably created during the 8th century AD, though the caves may have had earlier Buddhist origins. The island was called Gharapuri – city of forts – until the Portuguese renamed it “Elephanta” after a large carved elephant they found near the place where their ships docked.

From the landing stage there is a long stairway to the top of the hill. The main cave is fronted by a verandah, at each end of which is a pillar carved in one of the various manifestations of Shiva. As you enter you will see a magnificent sculpture of Shiva as Nataraj, Lord of the Cosmic Dance, an enraptured expression on his face as with his left hand he removes the veil of ignorance.

The most outstanding sculpture is a powerful bust of Trimurti, the three-faced Shiva who represents the Hindu trinity: Brahma (The Creator), Vishnu (The Preserver) and Shiva (The Destroyer, or power through which the universe evolves). In other panels Shiva is depicted in service to humanity as he brings the River Ganges to earth, and at his most fearsome, as he crushes the power of the demon Andhaka.A number of scenes portray Lord Shiva with his consort Parvati. In one he stands with his prospective bride just before their wedding day. She looks down shyly, but her body is clearly drawn towards him.  Behind Parvati is her father Himalaya, and to his left is the moon god, carrying a gift.  Return to the landing stage and return to the mainland.
