Since 2005, Troop 332 (now with Troop 7332) has sent over 100 scouts and adults to Philmont, the BSA’s High Adventure base in New Mexico. Treks at Philmont involve backpacking for 10 days at varying difficulties. Several have gone on to work at Philmont and all have gained an increased appreciation for their scout skills and beauty of the land. Very few troops are able to organize their own contingents. But Philmont is not just about hiking. Most days, there are program areas at your camp or on the trail that allow you to experience options such as:
.
* Rock Climbing
* Shooting Sports
* Horseback Riding
* Mining
* Logging
* Challenge Games
* Western Lore
* Leave no Trace
* Search and Rescue
* Mountain Biking
* And much more!
.
‘Crews’ at Philmont are made up of 8 to 12 people, with no more than 4 adults per crew, with the majority being youth. The crew elects a youth Crew Leader for the trek who is in charge.
Practice and preparation is very important for a successful trip. All participants are required to attend at least 3 overnight practice hikes. Goals of practices include team development, gear & equipment evaluation, personal organization, and physical conditioning.
Additionally, all participants are required to meet the BSA height/weight/BMI requirements (see the Philmont Contract). These requirements are non-negotiable for adults and only slightly adjustable for youth, and only with advance discussion between the Philmont medical staff and your Scout’s doctor.
For a youth to participate in our trek, they must be all of the following
1) Registered as a Scout
2) First Class (Troop rule)
3) 14 years old at time of departure (OR have completed 8th grade and 13 years old at time of departure)
For an adult to participate in our trek, they must be all of the following
1) Registered volunteer with Scouting America
2) Current, unexpired, certifications: Safeguarding Youth and Hazardous Weather
3) Youth minded - willing to support the Scouts in their successes and failures while allowing them to lead
We understand life events happen and there are many things competing for everyone's time. Should something come up where you are no longer able to attend the trip, we will work with you to the best of our ability.
Trip deposits are not refundable.
Any funds spent or irreversibly committed on your behalf cannot be refunded. The best option to recover these costs is to find a replacement participant to buy your spot.
