NOT GOOD. There was little to no communication about basics, like where I'm taking a train, where I'm staying the night, etc.- THE DAY OF none of this information was told to me. I didn't know where I was going and when. Turned out they only got me a train ticket halfway back to Cusco and then had a man pick me up alone in the middle of nowhere and drive me (a small single woman) alone back in his car, back to Cusco in the middle of the night, which i found out was the plan when I was asked to get off the train since my ticket wasnt paid through Cusco. My tour guide in Sacred Valley didnt speak much English and gave very little information to the English speakers as a result, wouldn't help me with basic information (where is an ATM? etc). My guide in Machu Picchu was great, and that was the only thing that went well. I would not book with them again.
Great: Machu Pichu experience with guide Mauro.
Not so good:
- emails via Wetravel -- link would arrive too late to activate
- information at time of booking was to pay the remainder $ the day prior to the excursion, at the Happy Gringo office; so it was confusing to get a different deadline from Wetravel AND the Happy Gringo office was closed when we went the day prior to the trip
- instead of "free time for lunch," the guide steered us into a pricy, touristy restaurant
- the van/train/bus connections all worked out but it would have provided us more peace of mind to have visibility into those details prior to 6pm the night before.
Booked a Machu Picchu 1 day tour based on the previous good reviews and description provided on their own website.
Reality and their description did not tally up:
- “Our driver will help you board the train” – Didn’t happen. Told to wait in a waiting and saw the driver drive off. We had been WhatsApped our outward tickets but the couple we were with had not so had to ask rail staff to print off their tickets for them. Me and my partner were in separate carriages for the journey but I was given a reasonable excuse later as to why this happened.
- “…our expert and professional guide will be waiting for you…. After a brief introduction and receiving essential instructions, you’ll have twenty minutes to prepare for your tour” – We got met by someone who told us to follow him and once in the main plaza he told us he wasn’t our guide and to meet back at that spot in one hour. No other information was given.
- “…Our guide will assist you in boarding the bus… the bus boarding process is straight forward and our guide will guide you through it…” – Didn’t happen. About half hour after being told to wait one hour to meet the guide I got a WhatsApp call telling me to go to the bus station and get on the bus as quick as possible as a guide was waiting up at Machu Picchu. I asked on this call where the bus station was and was told to ask someone. I am unsure what would have happened if I didn’t have phone data to receive this call and be sent the bus tickets. With help of locals we located the bus queue and joined this.
- At the start of the trip I realised I had only been sent the outward rail tickets so messaged asking for the return tickets. I sent a few more messages through the morning as I was getting stressed not having the tickets and received them six hours after the first message was sent and about 90 minutes before we were due to get the train.
Machu Picchu itself was beautiful and the guide around this was great. I feel like I got very little service from Happy Gringo beyond the transport by van to and from the train station so emailed them asking for a partial refund. I worked out the cost of the tickets booked and provided (train, bus & entry) and asked for about 50% refund on the amount which I worked out to be Happy Gringo's cut to factor in the Machu Picchu tour guide and shared taxi. I got a reply refusing any refund as as "all the services included in your tour — transportation, entrance tickets, train journeys, bus tickets, and guided tour — were fully provided". Based on their reply if you want a ticket booking service that's what they do and you could book independently for cheaper. If you want a fully guided stress free tour from door-to-door that is not what they think they provide so go elsewhere.
Good tour overall, with a few exceptions:
My initial email with the tour operator indicated we would be on circuit 2, but we ended up on circuit 3B because tickets were sold out by the time we arrived in Aguas Calientes. It was not made clear that we needed to buy our own tickets upon arrival, but our tour guide (who met us at the train station) handed us money to go buy the tickets ourselves. Although this process was very confusing, it ended up being fine because circuit 3B also had great views.
Lunch was clearly indicated as being included in the tour. The wording was 'After exploring Machu Picchu, you will take a bus back to Aguas Calientes town. Here we will have lunch at a local restaurant.' the tour guide had no clue what we were talking about, and said it had never been included in previous tours.
This, and the circuit issue, indicates over promising and under-delivering.
The last issue is that our return train tickets back to Ollantaytambo were sent to a person who was also on the tour with us but who we did not know. I didn't appreciate having my personal information (passport information, etc) shared with strangers unnecessarily. She ended up screenshotting them and texting them to us so we'd have them on hand.
Other than that, all other parts of the tour were good, especially the hotel they booked on our behalf. The guide was very knowledgeable about Machu Picchu.
