About your trip

The Northern Tier Holiday Stay is a popular winter camping program by Scouting America's Northern Tier High Adventure, offering youth (ages 14+ or 8th grade) a chance to learn cold-weather survival skills over the December/January holidays by camping on snow and ice, often featuring activities like snowshoeing, ice fishing, and dogsledding, with all gear provided.

Key Aspects

  • Program: Learn winter camping basics, setting up camps, building snow shelters, and cooking in sub-zero conditions.

  • Activities: Snowshoeing, skiing, ice fishing, and optional dogsledding (Okpik Musher Camp).

  • Location: Primarily at the Charles L. Sommers Wilderness Canoe Base in Ely, Minnesota, home to the Okpik program.

  • Logistics: Crews pull gear in sleds (pulks) across frozen lakes, with full outfitting (gear, food, interpreters) included.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Youth must be 14 years old or 13 and completed 8th grade

  • We would like to have more youth than adults attending
