Easter Island Geography

The island is shaped like a triangle 14 miles (23 km) long by 7 miles (11 km) wide, it has an area of 63 square miles (163 square km). Mount Terevaka, is the highest point at 1,969 feet (600 metres) above sea level. Hanga Roa is the one and only town. It is quite easy to drive around the island in one day, stopping at several historical sites. For most people, 3 days is the minimum amount of time needed to experience the Rapa Nui culture and history.

How to schedule a trip to Easter Island

Daily flights depart from Santiago airport every morning. It's necessary to arrive in Santiago at least one day before your flight to Easter Island.

The return flight from Easter Island to Santiago airport arrives late in the evening around 9pm. We recommend you allow at least 1 overnight before scheduling your connecting flights.

Day 1

Fly Santiago to Hanga Roa / Arrival and Cultural Introduction

Be at the SCL airport around 6am. (TBD) Fly 5,5h to Mataveri International Airport (IPC) where your local tour guide will be waiting. Welcome with a traditional flower necklace.
Transfer to your hotel in Hanga Roa for check in
Afternoon walking tour of Hanga Roa: visit the church, artisan market, and Ahu Tahai for sunset. Includes dinner with local Rapa Nui cuisine.

Day 2

Moai Highlights & Ancient Platforms

Full-day excursion to the southeastern coast:
Sunrise at Ahu Tongariki: the island’s largest ceremonial platform with 15 restored moai. Rano Raraku Quarry: the "moai factory" with unfinished statues.

Ahu Akahanga: ruins and toppled moai. Then enjoy a picnic lunch.

On the return, visit Ana Kai Tangata cave with ancient bird paintings.

(optional) Horse riding or Hiking to the summit of Terevaka Volcano at sunset. You will see the whole island from above. (cost of horse rental not included)

Day 3

Boat Navigation & Motus / Traditional Dance Performance

Morning boat trip (shared navigation) along the southwestern coast.
Sail around the cliffs of Rano Kau and Orongo village.
Approach the three famous islets (motus): Motu Nui, Motu Iti, and Motu Kao Kao, historically used in the Birdman competition.
Opportunity for snorkeling or swimming depending on sea conditions.
Evening Traditional dance show with dinner.

Day 4

North Coast & Anakena Beach

Morning excursion to the north coast:
Visit:  Ahu Te Pito Kura with the largest moai ever transported.
See the magnetic stone “Navel of the World.”
Arrive at Anakena Beach in the afternoon.
Relax on white coral sand and swim in turquoise warm waters. 
Admire nearby Ahu Nau Nau moai platforms.
Return to Hanga Roa in the evening. Dine on your own in the village.

Rano Kau & Flight to Santiago

Morning excursion to Rano Kau volcano. Visit the crater with its unique microclimate.
Explore Orongo Ceremonial Village, site of the Birdman cult.
Transfer to the airport for 5.5h flight to SCL. Arrive in SCL (usually around 9pm)
