Sightseeing at Swyambhunath, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath

After breakfast, we will start sightseeing in Kathmandu city. You can visit Swyambhunath, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath.

Swyambhunath, the oldest shrine in the world, established more than 2,500 years ago. Swyambhunath commands a superb view of the Kathmandu Valley. The four sides of this ancient structure are painted with the compassionate eyes of Buddha; between them, a mystical third eye symbolizes true wisdom. From Swyambhunath you will be transferred to Boudhanath.

Boudhanath Stupa is one of the most imposing landmarks of Kathmandu and is a center of Tibetan Buddhism. The stupa is built on a massive three-level mandala-style platform and is 36 meters (118 feet) in height. The base of the stupa is adorned with 108 small images of the Dhyani Amitabha Buddha and is inset with prayer wheels. Thousands of pilgrims circle the stupa in a clockwise direction each day spinning the prayer wheels. It is said that each spin of a prayer wheel is the equivalent of reciting the mantra. The stupa’s massive mandala makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal. The ancient stupa is one of the largest in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Stupa is on the ancient trade route from Tibet that enters the Kathmandu Valley by the village of Sankhu in the northeast corner. Tibetan merchants have rested and offered prayers here for many centuries. When refugees entered Nepal from Tibet in the 1950s, many decided to live around Boudhanath. The Stupa is said to entomb the remains of a Buddhist sage, perhaps parts of the Buddha’s body (bones, teeth), or sacred texts and other ceremonial objects.

After visiting the largest spherical stupa in Nepal, transfer to Pashupatinath Temple. It will take around a 4-5 min drive from Boudhanath.

The magnificent Pashupatinath temple with its astonishing architectural beauty is situated on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River. Dedicated to the Hindu God of Destruction, Lord Shiva, this temple is regarded as the most sacred of all Lord Shiva temples. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple comprises a richly ornamented pagoda that houses the sacred linga, or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva.

Every year thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to pay homage to this temple. Non-Hindu visitors are strictly prohibited from entering the temple however; they are permitted to view the temple from the east banks of the River Bagmati.

Pashupatinath is also Nepal's most renowned Hindu cremation site. In the Hindu Culture, after a person is dead, his/her body is wrapped in cloth, placed on bamboo litter, and brought to the cremation site where the eldest son in the family burns the body. The ashes from the dead body are collected and swept into the River Bagmati which eventually joins the Holy Ganges. Arya Ghat is of special importance because it is where the members of the royal family were cremated. The main cremation site is Bhasmeshvar Ghat, which is the most-used cremation site in the Kathmandu Valley.

Sightseeing at Patan and Kirtipur

After breakfast, we will visit Patan and Kritipur.

Patan, also known as Lalitpur, is a historic city in Nepal, just south of Kathmandu. Renowned for its rich cultural heritage and exquisite Newari architecture, Patan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Durbar Square is adorned with intricately carved temples, palaces, and courtyards, reflecting the city's ancient glory. The city is famous for its metalwork, woodcarving, and traditional crafts, making it a hub for artisans and craftsmen. Patan's vibrant streets are lined with bustling markets, offering a glimpse into local life and traditions. It remains a cultural gem, preserving Nepal's artistic and architectural legacy for generations to come.

Kirtipur is a historic town located in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. Renowned for its rich cultural heritage and ancient architecture, it was once a separate kingdom before being annexed by the Gorkha Kingdom in the 18th century. The town is characterized by its narrow lanes, traditional Newari houses, and ancient temples, including the revered Bagh Bhairab Temple and Chilancho Stupa. Kirtipur is also known for its vibrant festivals, traditional crafts, and the prestigious Tribhuvan University, which adds a youthful energy to its atmosphere. With its blend of history, culture, and academic significance, Kirtipur remains a captivating destination for visitors.

Drive to Nagarkot via Bhaktapur

After breakfast, we will drive to Nagarkot. Nagarkot is around 30 km from Kathmandu and takes around 1 hour to reach. En route, we will visit Bhaktapur and Changunarayan.

Bhaktapur or Bhadgaon, literally the ‘City of Devotees’ is a major tourist destination that takes visitors back in time. Bhaktapur lies on the Arniko Highway that connects Kathmandu to the Chinese border. Bhaktapur is still untouched by rapid urbanization and has managed to retain its brick-paved roads, charming red brick houses, and a way of life that goes back to medieval times. This ancient city is also famous for pottery and woodcarving amply displayed on the squares and windows respectively.

You can also try the Special variation of yogurt " JUJU DHAU".

The extraordinary Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its monuments reflect the glory days of the Malla Dynasty when art and architecture thrived in the three cities of the valley.

In Bhaktapur Durbar Square, visit the Nyatapola Temple, the unique Temple that means ‘five storied’ and rises above the city’s landscape as a remarkable landmark. Bhairavnath Temple, dedicated to Bhairav, the God of Terror, is a three-storied temple noted for its artistic grandeur and stands adjacent to the famous five-storied Nyatapola Temple. The Golden Gate is the entrance to the 15th-century Palace of 55 Carved Windows. The Golden Gate is a masterpiece in repousse art, which has added splendor to this palace square that consists of buildings dating from the 13th century to the 18th century.

You can also stroll around Taumadhi Tole, a short street lined with tourist shops.

Bhaktapur was one of the most affected areas by the April 2015 earthquake. Renovation is currently under process.

After reaching Nagarkot we will complete the Check-in process at the hotel and take the remaining time for refreshment.

Nagarkot is situated 30 km northeast of Kathmandu city. From here one can see the majestic Mount Everest and other snowcapped peaks of the Himalayas. The top of Nagarkot encompasses more than 200 miles of snowcapped peaks, from Annapurna in the west beyond Everest in the east. It also offers a panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley. Nagarkot is a renowned international tourist destination with spectacular views of the whole Langtang range, sunrise over the mountains, and sunset views. It is a popular overnight holiday destination away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
