About this trip

Step into the Arctic night, where the sky comes alive.

This carefully curated Northern Lights escape invites you to experience one of nature’s most extraordinary phenomena from one of Iceland’s most reliable and breathtaking viewing locations—Eyjafjörður in North Iceland.

Available from London and Manchester, this seamless 4-day / 3-night all-inclusive journey is designed for travelers who want more than just a glimpse of the aurora. It’s about immersion—combining comfort, authentic experiences, and the raw beauty of the north.

Your base is a boutique hotel in the peaceful village of Hjalteyri, just outside Akureyri, perfectly positioned along the fjord. Far from city lights, this location offers exceptional conditions for Northern Lights viewing—often visible directly from the hotel.

Each day unfolds with carefully selected experiences that showcase the best of North Iceland:

  • Whale watching in the rich waters of Eyjafjörður

  • Relaxation in geothermal bathing areas

  • Visits to dramatic waterfalls and coastal landscapes

  • A journey to the historic fishing town of Siglufjörður and its renowned Herring Museum

As night falls, the experience shifts. After dinner each evening, you head out in search of the aurora—guided by local expertise, chasing clear skies and the best possible viewing conditions.

With three nights of Northern Lights opportunities, comfortable accommodation at either Hotel Hjalteyri or Kaldi Hotel, and all meals and activities included, this is a seamless and deeply rewarding Arctic experience.

This is not just a trip to see the Northern Lights.
It’s a journey into the quiet magic of the Icelandic north—where nature, light, and stillness come together in unforgettable ways.

Arrival in Akureyri & Into the Fjord

Welcome to North Iceland.

On arrival at Akureyri Airport, you are met by your guide and introduced to the charm of the north’s capital with a relaxed walking tour through town. Take time to explore at your own pace—browse local shops, enjoy lunch, and soak in the atmosphere of this vibrant yet intimate Arctic town.

In the afternoon, depart for your boutique hotel in either Hjalteyri or Árskógssandur, both set in peaceful, picturesque fishing villages along the shores of Eyjafjörður. Just 25 minutes from Akureyri, these locations offer exceptional conditions for Northern Lights viewing, far from artificial light.

Dinner is served at a local restaurant, followed by time to unwind in seaside hot tubs and sauna—set right on the edge of the fjord. As night falls, this tranquil setting becomes the perfect place to look to the sky for your first glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Day 2

Whales, Heritage, and Northern Lights Dining.

Begin the day with a memorable whale watching excursion on Eyjafjörður. Spend approximately two hours on the water aboard traditional wooden boats, with the chance to encounter some of the ocean’s largest and most graceful mammals in their natural habitat.

From here, journey north along the dramatic coastline to Siglufjörður, Iceland’s northernmost town on the Tröllaskagi Peninsula. Once the center of the country’s herring industry, the town offers a fascinating glimpse into Iceland’s maritime heritage, brought to life through a visit to the Herring Era Museum.

In the evening, the experience becomes truly special. Enjoy a Northern Lights dining event—a five-course meal crafted from local Icelandic ingredients, set in a unique greenhouse setting. As you dine, a local storyteller shares the myths, science, and cultural significance of the aurora.

After dinner, step out into the Arctic night for a guided Northern Lights search around the nearby lake, where darkness and open skies provide ideal conditions for witnessing this extraordinary natural phenomenon.

Day 3

Waterfalls, Geothermal Wonders and Arctic Night

After breakfast, set out for your first stop at the spectacular Goðafoss—the “Waterfall of the Gods,” where powerful glacial waters cascade in a sweeping horseshoe.

Continue east into the otherworldly landscapes of Mývatn, a region shaped by volcanic forces. Here, steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and vast lava fields create one of Iceland’s most unique natural environments.

Take time to relax and unwind at the Mývatn Nature Baths, soaking in warm, mineral-rich waters while surrounded by dramatic scenery.

A late lunch/early dinner is served at Vogafjós Farm Resort, known for its fresh, locally sourced cuisine and authentic farm-to-table experience.

As night falls, head out on a guided Northern Lights hike, complete with warm drinks and light refreshments—an intimate way to experience the Arctic night.

For those seeking something truly unique, an optional night snorkeling experience is available. Explore the shoreline with underwater lights, revealing Iceland’s hidden marine life beneath the surface—an unforgettable experience, with the possibility of the Northern Lights dancing overhead (£85).
