Machame route is the route of choice for many people because it provides impressive view and a variety of habitats. More than 50% of climbers and seasoned climbers choose the Machame route. it is one of the cheaper routes due to its easy access and shorter itinerary. The route is known to be the most scenic route of the

Kilimanjaro Mountain as it gives the climber an experience of the scenic view. The route is well known due to the success rate of summit for the climbers as it gives a great time for acclimatization on the ascending to the Lover tower and descending to Barranco before heading up to Karanga and the Barafu to the Summit.

With this route on second day, you will join other climbers from Lemosho and Shira routes before heading to the lover tower up to the summit and descending through the Mweka gate as it is different from the Marangu route, the ascending route for Machame route is not the same as the descending route as you will be ascending via the Machame route and descending via the Mweka route to Mweka gate. This route also is designed for physically fit people with hiking experience but plenty for first time climbers use the route as well and do well. It is rated as one of the Kilimanjaro’s better route than all route and that is why is recommended.

The climbing activity can be done for six days or seven by using this route. The success rate is significantly higher than when using the seven days. The hike begins at Machame gate which is located in the southern base of mountain which is just short drive from Moshi or Arusha

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (1790 m) to Machame Camp (3010 m):

After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up at the lodge and taken to the entrance gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. After registration at the gate, your Kilimanjaro adventure will begin. In no time you will be deep within the magnificent mountain rainforest with ancient trees, primeval ferns, liana, lichen and moss that carpets the ground and drapes from the trees. After 5 to 6 hours, you will reach the destination, Machame Camp which is situated just above the tree line. Here, at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro, you will have your first dinner followed by an overnight stay in the tents.

Machame Camp (3010 m) to New Shira Camp (3845 m):

After breakfast an early morning start, the path become steeper. The landscape changes into heath and moorland and the open landscape allows you to see the impressive mountain range. Trip in this day is shorter than the previous day and you will arrive at the New Shira Camp by mid-afternoon. The camp has a breath-taking view of the mountain and during sunset, the evening sun lights the rock face and glacier of Kibo.

New Shira Camp (3845 m) via Lava Tower (4640 m) to Barranco Camp (3960

This day you climb about 800m but you will be camping at an elevation only slightly higher than the previous night. The trek begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the Lava Tower. The vegetation becomes scattered as the landscape changes to an afro-alpine desert. The route passes through the sweeping Barranco Valley with its lobelia and giant Senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours, you will arrive at the most beautiful camp on the mountain the Barranco Camp where you will take your dinner and overnight.

Barranco Camp (3960 m) to Barafu Camp (4640 m):

After breakfast, start you with the climb of the Barranco Wall. Safety is more important and your guides will assist you wherever necessary. After reaching Karanga Valley, you will have lunch, followed by a 2 to 3 hours climb to Barafu Camp. Once at the camp, you can relax, have dinner and call it an early night.

Barafu Camp (4640 m) via Uhuru Peak (5895 m) to Mweka Camp (3080 m):

After a breakfast, the climb begins at around midnight by torch light. You will climb the screes of Kibo and after 5 to 7 hours of ascending in the dark, you will arrive at Stella Point (5,730 m), the crater rim of Mount Kilimanjaro. Another approximately 2 hours you will climb along the crater ridge this will lead you to reach Uhuru Peak. At uhuru peak you will see Mt Kilimanjaro in all its glory and enjoying the 360degrees view over the landscape below as the sun rises. You are now standing on the “Roof of Africa”. The simple descent runs almost along the same route and shortly before midday, you should arrive at Barafu Camp, where the porters and the cook will be waiting for you. After a warm meal and a well-deserved break of approximately 1-2 hrs, you will be on your way down to Mweka Camp where supper and a well-earned rest await you.

Mweka Camp (3080 m) via Mweka Gate (1630 m) to Moshi

This is the last day of your trip with a traditional farewell ceremony from the mountain crew. Then for 2 to 3 hours’ fall down through the rainforest continues to Mweka Gate where your driver will be waiting for you. He will take you back to the Meru View Lodge and after a warm shower, the rest of the day is to celebrate for your achievement and drive back to the Airport.
