There is something extraordinary about the massive wildebeest safaris of Calving great migration between late January and early March. Within a few weeks, most female wildebeests abandon their young in a synchronized birth that fills the southern Serengeti plains with more than 400,000 young.
It is estimated that 8,000 wildebeest are born every day, or 300 every hour! While lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog are fed up with these lanky little wildebeests, synchronized calving is an effective survival mechanism for the species: there is simply too much food for predators.
wildebeest congregate in the southern plains of the Serengeti, the Nduturange and the northern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA).They are attracted to the abundant fresh grass of the fertile plains and the calcium in the soil, which is essential for growth and is passed to the young through the mother's milk. Between late January and mid-March, more than 80% of fertile wildebeest females give birth within a few weeks.
More than 400,000 tiny wildebeests line the plains and predators rush in to feast on easy prey. Wildebeest still live in the southern part of Serengeti National Park but are preparing to migrate north when the plains dry up.
