We leave Moshi town and drive 45 minutes. at Marangu Park gate for check-in. From there we continue to Naro Moru, another 68 km and about 2 hours on bad roads to the starting point of Rongai (1996 m). We start our excursion from the village of Nale Moru. The small winding path crosses the wheat fields before entering the pine forest, then we climb gently through a wood. The trail is not steep, but rather a gentle stroll through beautiful countryside. The first night camp is at Simba Camp (2626m). Camp facilities include public restrooms and a wooden table with benches, but no cabana.

We walk from Simba camp to Kibo (3482m). We arrive at the First Caves for lunch. The distance is 5.8 km. After lunch we continue the trek until we reach Kikelewa camp at around 3679m. Here you have stunning views, including a stream below the cave.

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes offers great views of this wilderness. The vegetation zone ends just before reaching your next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, which sits below the imposing towers of Mawenzi. Here we spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the area.

After breakfast, we head west and continue climbing on the east side of Kibo. We then cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, taking 4-5 hours to reach Kibo Hut. We spend the rest of the day resting to prepare for the final ascent which begins around midnight. Overnight at Kibo Hut.

 Kibo Hut (4730m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Horombo Hut (3705m)
Walking time: 7 to 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak | 6 to 8 hours to descend to Horombo
•Distance: approximately 5.4 km uphill and 15 km downhill. • Habitat: rocks/ice cap peaks
The total time you spend walking that day is approximately 14 hours. So be prepared for a very busy day. You will get up around 11:20 p.m. and after tea and cookies, we will begin the ascent. The first section of the trail is a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting place. The trail then zigzags up to Gillman's Point (5681m) which is located on the rim of the crater. This section is very steep with a lot of blocks and requires a lot of physical and mental effort. This is probably the most demanding section of the whole route. From Gillmans Point you will usually find snow up to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa!
 

Weather conditions at the top will dictate how much time you can spend taking photos and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Then we begin our 3 hour descent to the Kibo refuge. After a short stop at the Kibo refuge, we collect all our remaining equipment and continue towards the Horombo refuge (3 hours) for the overnight stay. The return to the Horombo refuge will seem surprisingly quick compared to the climb. Later in the evening you will dine in the mountains and have a well deserved night's sleep.

After breakfast, we continue our descent for about 6 hours past the Mandara refuge to the Marangu gate. Successful climbers receive their summit certificate at Marangu Gate. Climbers who have reached Gillman's Point (5685m) will receive green certificates and those who have reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) will receive gold certificates. Then we return to Moshi for a long awaited hot shower and celebration.
