About this trip

Lemosho is regarded as the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro as it offers panoramic views of various sides of the mountain. It features all the benefits, offering, and success ratio of Machame Route by starting further round to the West. This Lemosho Route leads you over the spectacular Shira Plateau and avoids the crowds on the early part of the Machame Route at the same time.

Day 1

You will be picked up by the staff of Jerry Tanzania Tours from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and driven to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening your guides will meet you at the hotel to brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day.

Accommodation: Panama Garden Resort
Journey time and Distance: 1 hour, 40 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi.

Day 2

After an early breakfast (08.00 a.m.), we will leave the hotel one hour later to arrive at the Londorossi Gate for registration around 12.00 p.m., and in time to have our picnic lunch. After Londorossi, we will have a short drive to the start point of today’s walk. Today our walk is a distance of 7 kilometers, with an expected 3 to 4 hours of walking time.
- Elevation: From 2,250 metres to 2,650 metres
- Walking time: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 7 kilometers
- Environment: Montane forest

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box, and Dinner
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp

Day 3

A longer day awaits. Starting off through the forest, you will notice how the vegetation gradually changes; the trees are thinning out and more shrubs appear as you ascend. You will see lobelias and Erica’s and cross Shira Ridge. After about five hours of hiking, you will stop for a hot lunch at Shira Camp 1. This spot has great views of the sister mountain Mt Meru and the Rift Valley below. The afternoon stretch will take about three hours and you will gain 240 meters in altitude. Still the landscape changes as you cross an area that was molten lava many years ago. Strange plants dot the landscape – giant Senecios – you should be close to Shira Camp 2. This is your camping spot for the night. If the weather is good, you should see the summit – an awesome view at sunset.

- Elevation: From 2,650 metres to 3,850 metres
- Walking time: 7-8 hours
- Distance: 12 kilometers
- Environment: Moorland

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box, and Dinner
Accommodation: Shira Camp 2

Day 4

Lots of ups and downs today. You will gain about 750 meters in height and will certainly feel the difference, only to descend again for tonight’s camp at Barranco. The up and down will help your body acclimatize. During the day you will reach an altitude of over 4,500 meters above sea
level. The day starts with an uphill above Shira Plateau towards the Lava Tower at 4,600 meters. The landscape is now almost bare alpine desert and resembles an entirely different world. Descending again, you will start seeing more vegetation – lobelias and the surreal scenarios in the sweeping Barranco Valley. After about seven hours (from when you started) you should reach Barranco Camp, by many considered the best camp on Kilimanjaro. Snacks and hot drinks are waiting as usual.

 - Elevation: From 3,850 metres to 3,900 meters
- Highest Point: Lava Tower, at 4,600 meters
- Walking time: 7-8 hours
- Distance: 12 kilometers
- Environment: Semi-desert

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box, and Dinner
Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Day 5

Do not be discouraged by what you see in front of you today; the Barranco Wall, known to the guides and porters as the “Breakfast Wall”. It is not as intimidating or frightening as it seems, though it is one of the steepest sections of the route. “Pole pole”, slowly slowly, as they say on the mountain, and you will reach the top. Use your hands if you need to, listen to the encouragement of the guides, and soon you will admire the spectacular views from the top. You will continue along the undulating ridge. Focus on Kibo peak and the southern glacier and before you know it, you will be at Karanga Camp in time for lunch. The rest of the afternoon can be spent relaxing and or enjoying the scenes around the camp.

- Elevation: From 3,900 metres to 3,995 metres
- Walking time: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 7 kilometers
- Environment: Alpine desert

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box, and Dinner
Accommodation: Karanga Camp

Day 6

Awakening to the sunlight dancing off the Kibo Summit, you will enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting out to today’s destination – Barafu Camp. Most of the day will be spent walking through very dry desertic terrain, with Kibo ever-present on your left side. After 3-4 hours you will reach Barafu Camp, where you will have an early dinner and overnight as the highlight of your trip is only a few short hours away.

- Elevation: From 3,995 metres to 4,673 metres
- Walking time: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 6 kilometers
- Environment: Alpine desert

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box, and Dinner

Day 7

The climb will start at midnight. You will be woken up just before that to have some tea and biscuits. Around 5-7 hours later you will reach Stella Point which is the crater rim of Kilimanjaro. After another 1-2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak at a height of 5,895 meters. This is truly a magnificent sight standing on top of Africa’s Highest Mountain watching the sunrise. This view will be one to remember and will make every minute of the last couple of days trekking worth your while. You will descent along the same way back to Barafu Camp which you will reach after 1 – 2 hours. The rest of the mountain team will be there waiting for you with some well-deserved snacks and refreshments. You will rest for an hour or two before making your way to Mweka Camp where you will spend your last night on the mountain.
