I booked two tours through Altitude Travel — the Pampas 2-day/1-night tour and the Salar de Uyuni 3-day/2-night tour — and unfortunately, I cannot recommend this agency.
From the very beginning, communication and guidance were lacking. When I first inquired about the Pampas tour, I was told that I needed to take a bus to Rurrenabaque on my own. For a travel agency, I would have expected at least some support — for example, helping me secure a ticket and letting me reimburse them, or at least providing clear guidance about which bus to take. Instead, I was left completely on my own to figure it out.
The situation with the bus was especially frustrating. The only bus cama they recommended was the more comfortable one, but its posted arrival time on the website was 9:30. Since the tour starts at 8:30, I obviously couldn’t take a bus that arrives an hour after the tour begins. So I booked an earlier one, which turned out to be lowest comfort bus company — something I was never told beforehand. And I didn’t know at the time that the website’s schedule was unreliable. None of this was explained to me. When I later brought it up, I was simply told “oh, that was a mistake, you booked the wrong one.” But how was I supposed to know that the posted arrival time was incorrect? If the agency knows certain bus schedules are inaccurate or misleading, they should clearly tell clients which options actually work.
Because there was no guidance at all, I ended up booking a low-comfort –14 hour bus without realizing it, and later had to go through the hassle of changing the ticket entirely on my own at my expense. Considering how much the quality of that long bus ride affects your energy for the tour, proper guidance would have made a huge difference. I wasn’t looking for luxury — I just needed clear information.
Unfortunately, the lack of communication continued during the tours themselves. For both tours, I was never told who my guide would be, who was supposed to pick me up, the name of the operator actually running the tour, or how many people would be in my group. None of my vouchers listed the operating company or provided any additional contact details.
The only contact I had was Faby from Altitude Travel. For the Rurrenabaque tour, she replied once, simply saying “someone will come pick you up.” After that, she became completely unresponsive — even when I waited over an hour for pickup without knowing who to look for. I want to be clear that this unresponsiveness happened specifically during the Pampas/Rurrenabaque tour; for the Uyuni tour, I didn’t reach out to her again. Still, an “emergency contact” who doesn’t reply when you genuinely need imformation is extremely stressful and unreliable.
To make matters worse, our guide in the Pampas — Luis — knew very little English and did not provide a good guiding experience. The surroundings and the nature were absolutely beautiful, but we had to figure things out on our own. Luis was on his phone most of the time, and aside from briefly answering questions, he didn’t explain anything proactively or create any sense of being guided, informed, or excited about what we were seeing. Compared to other groups on the same tour, whose guides were much more engaged, it really stood out — and not in a good way. I’m honestly not even sure he was a trained guide at all.
As for the Salar de Uyuni tour, the experience itself was very good — but that had nothing to do with Altitude Travel. It was operated by Pearl of Bolivia (or a similarly named company), so the quality came entirely from the operator, not from Altitude Travel. I cannot credit Altitude Travel for the professionalism of a completely different agency.
Meanwhile, every other traveler I met had been given far more detailed information by their agencies — they knew their guides, operators, pickup times, group sizes, and logistics well in advance. Many even felt sorry for how little information I had been given.
Because of the poor guidance, misleading or missing information, unreliable communication, and lack of support for essential logistics, I cannot recommend Altitude Travel. There are definitely other agencies that provide clearer, more helpful, and more organized service.
The trip was fantastic. Superbly guided, high-quality bikes that were inspected at every stop. Great snacks and meals. Nel and Eloy sent us some great photos and clips after the trip. Thanks very much.
We booked several tours with Altitude Travel. It was a great experience. The tours were well organized and competitively priced. Altitude travel was very informative and responsive in their Whatsapp communication.
