Walk through history, nature, and time itself in the French Pyrenees

Step into a world of medieval fortresses, timeless villages, and sweeping Pyrenean landscapes on this 7-day hiking adventure along Sentier de Cathar. This long-distance hiking trail follows ancient routes once used by the Cathars, a spiritual and cultural group who defied the power of the medieval Roman Catholic Church. You’ll journey through the heart of southern France, where past and present meet in the shadow of dramatic cliffs and castle ruins.

Our adventure explores the western half of this 240 km trail, covering some of its most breathtaking and historically rich sections. This is a through-hike, so your backpack will carry all your necessities. This gives you the freedom to immerse yourself in the beauty and rhythm of the trail. Your main luggage will be transported ahead, meeting you again at a mid-way checkpoint and again at the journey’s end. We stay in a mix of locally owned guest houses, hiking lodges, and cozy bed-and-breakfasts that are familiar with the adventurous hikers exploring the ancient Sentier de Cathar.

This tour is a 3 out of 5. 

Guests will meet at the train station in Foix, France, at 11:00 AM. Following a picnic lunch, we will visit the interactive museum at the Chateau de Foix as an introduction to the history of the trail on which we are about to embark. We will settle into our gîte in Roquefixade to check backpacks, enjoy a homemade meal, and prepare for an early rise the next morning.

As the morning light illuminates the Ariège side of the Pyrenees Mountains, we wake up to an awe-inspiring view of Roquefixade Castle, standing tall on steep cliffs above. We hike along the valley's forestry track, taking in the breathtaking views along the way. As the day draws to a close, we find ourselves at the foot of Montségur Castle, an impressive and historically significant edifice that fills us with a sense of wonder.

The trail begins at Montségur Castle, which is the most infamous of all the Cathar castles and is considered the historical highlight of the whole trail. The hike takes you through the stunning Gorges de la Frau and ends in Comus, a charming alpine village surrounded by pine forest and limestone mountains. Once we reach Comus, we can treat ourselves to the most delicious ice cream sundaes while enjoying the breathtaking mountain views.

Today we traverse some of the most dazzling landscapes on the Sentier de Cathar, crossing plateaus, gullies, and gorges to reach the highest point of the trail, at an altitude of 1365m/4,478ft. Just before arriving at our destination in Puivert, we will come across remnants of World War II. This area was an important center for the Maquis (French Resistance fighters) against German troops. As we approach Puivert, you will have the chance to visit the Poste de Commandement (PC) du Maquis, which is a reconstructed stone cabin that served as the local Resistance HQ during the war. Additionally, you will get to see the large and remarkably intact Puivert castle, which was once a bustling center for medieval Occitan music and performance. However, it was seized by French forces during the Albigensian Crusade.

This portion of the Sentier de Cathar is characterized by sustained ascents and descents. As you journey through this rugged terrain, be on the lookout for wild boar, deer, lizards, and Lammergeier vultures. The stage concludes in the delightful mountain village of Quirbajou, where you can enjoy a glass of Maury, the local aperitif, with your dinner.

Leaving Quirbajou, a small, quiet hamlet tucked into the foothills, the trail meanders through shady forests and rolling hillsides, offering peaceful stretches where the only sounds are birdsong and the crunch of your boots on the path.

The approach to Puilaurens Castle is nothing short of spectacular. Perched high on a rocky outcrop, the fortress seems to rise directly from the limestone cliffs. A final steep climb leads you to its gates, where stone walls and towers still stand guard as they did centuries ago. From the top, you’re rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Pyrenees and the surrounding forests. For those ending the Sentier de Cathar here, it is a fitting finale to a stage that combines the serenity of nature with the drama of history.

After a tour of the castle, you are picked up and driven to a very comfortable hotel with a Michelin-starred restaurant. You will have access to your luggage tonight and tomorrow.

This unforgettable first leg of the Sentier de Cathar is a natural stopping place for hikers who do not have time to complete the entire tour. Those who do not head home today spend a rest day in Mirepoix, a charming medieval town famous for its rich history and architecture. Meander in and out of shops or relax in one of the cafés under the arcades in the square. We return to Gincla, a peaceful hamlet surrounded by forests and rivers, nestled in the foothills of the Corbières.

From the forested slopes around Gincla, the trail follows gentle paths that soon give way to more dramatic scenery. Enter the Gorges de Galamus, a spectacular limestone canyon where sheer cliffs rise above while the turquoise waters sparkle below. Along the gorge, tucked into the rock itself, lies a hermitage with origins dating back to the 7th century. It’s one of the most atmospheric stops on the entire trail, a moment where history and nature merge in silence and beauty.

After passing through the gorge, the path opens into gentler terrain as you approach Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, a quaint town surrounded by vineyards.

Leaving Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, the trail leads you into the rolling hills and vineyard-clad slopes of the Corbières. Soon, the route rises into more rugged terrain, and you find yourself gazing up at the spectacular Château de Quéribus, perched like an eagle’s nest on a limestone peak. Known as one of the last Cathar strongholds, Quéribus rewards the climb with sweeping views of the Pyrenees behind you and, on a clear day, the Mediterranean shimmering in the distance.

From Quéribus, the path descends gently toward the enchanting village of Cucugnan, famous for its storybook windmill. Wandering its narrow streets, you feel the seamless blending of history and living tradition. This stage captures the essence of the Sentier Cathar—a balance of dramatic landscapes, medieval history, and cultural discovery.

The trail sets out across the warm, Mediterranean landscapes of the Corbières. The air is fragrant with wild thyme and rosemary, and the rolling hills give way to rugged limestone outcrops.

Soon, the silhouette of Château d’Aguilar appears on its rocky perch above Tuchan, a reminder of the region’s turbulent medieval past. Standing among its weathered stones, you can gaze out across the plains toward the Pyrenees and the sea—views that once gave Aguilar its strategic power.

The day ends in Tuchan, a welcoming wine-growing village, where local hospitality and the taste of Corbières wines offer the perfect close to this tour.
