After breakfast a short day will be beginning by leaving the rain forest and entering the heathland moorland vegetation. You will be climbing up a steep ridge to reach a small semi-circular cliff known as picnic rock. There are excellent views of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira plateau from here and it is a good resting point too. You will cross many streams and walk over a rocky ridge onto Shira plateau that leads to Shira Camp (3840 M). Our porters will setup your tents prior to arriving at the camp and they will prepare drinking and washing water for you. You will enjoy evening snacks then dinner prepared by our experienced mountain chef. Be prepared for a cold night as temperatures drop below freezing point at the camp. This will highly depend on the seasonality.

Habitat: Semi desert

After breakfast, you will start a gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind and enter the semi desert and rocky landscape. After 5 hours of walking east, you will be come face to face with the lava tower (4630 M). You will have your packed lunch at this point and the hikers have the option of climbing the massive Lava Tower weather permitting. At this point it is normal for the climbers to experience the effect of altitude including headaches and shortness of breath. After lunch, we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco Valley 3900 M, sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below. This allows acclimatization. Drinking and washing water and dinner will be served as hikers view the sun setting.

Habitat: Alpine Desert

After spending a night at Great Barranco Camp, you will start your journey by climbing up the loft eastern wall of gorge and soak in the dramatic view of Kilimanjaro’s ice fields covered by blanket of frost. Then brace yourself for a 90-minute climbing up the magnificent Barranco wall, also known as the breakfast wall, after which you will continue along a clam trail until you reach the Karanga Valley. Here you will settle and mentally prepare for the stretch of your journey. Dinner and overnight at  Karanga  camps.

Hiking Time: 3 – 4 Hours

Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, you will spend your last day on the Kilimanjaro Machame route before reaching the summit. You will cross some splendid volcanic lands, with Kibo volcano (highest of the Kilimanjaro Volcanoes) and its remaining glaciers as the backdrop. Your tents will be exposed to wind and rocks so it is important for trekkers to familiarize themselves with the campsite before dark. Your guide will brief you on how to prepare your summit night. Also, make sure you are going to sleep by 19:00 after you have been served an early dinner.

Hiking time: 8 hours to reach Uhuru peak, 7 – 8 hours to descend to Mweka

Distance: 7 Km ascend and 23Km Descend

Habitat: Stone screen and ice capped summit.

Your guide will wake you up around 23:30 for tea and biscuits. You will ascent by torchlight for your first summit attempt. The steeply climb over loose volcanic scree has some graded zigzag and a slow but steady pace will take you to Stela Point (5735M) located on the crater rim. After enjoying the magnificent sun rise, you will continue ascending for about 2 hours on a snow -covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895). Reaching the summit of Mt.Kilimanjaro is a life time accomplishment! You will be able to spend a short time on the summit, taking some photographs and then after you will start descending. It is only about 3 hours descending from Uhuru to Barafu camp where you can be served with the hot lunch and rest for a while before descending to Mweka Camp (3100M). 

The Mweka trail will lead you through the scree and rocks to the moorland and eventually into the rain forest. Mweka Camp is in the upper rain forest, so fog and rain should be expected. You will have your dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Hiking Distance: 15 Km

Habitat: Forest

After a well-served breakfast, your staff will have a big celebration full of dancing and singing. It is here on the mountain that you will present your tips to the guide, assistant guides, chefs, and porters. After celebrating you will start your descent on well-maintained trail through lovely tropical forest alive with birdcalls and boasting lush undergrowth with considerable botanical interest. Our route winds to the National Park gate where all hikers required signing their names to receive certificates of compilation. Hikers who reached Stela Point (5735 M) received Green Certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak (5895M) received Gold Certificates. After receiving certificates our driver will drive you through the coffee and banana farms to Mweka village on the way to Keys Hotel, where you will get a long overdue shower and more celebration.
