Before we kick off our hiking tour in Chile’s Lake and Volcano District, you should take a day or two to adjust to local time and recover from your travels, and allow for any flight or luggage delays. You should fly into Temuco airport (ZCO).


In Chile, domestic flights are operated by 3 local airline companies: LatamSky Airline and JetSmart.

 

Official Airport Transfer


The official shuttle company at Temuco’s Airport is called TransAraucania.

They are the only authorized shuttle company at the airport, and their staff wears a blue and green uniform. By contract with the airport, they must have available transport based in the domestic flights arriving every day.

They have a counter at the airport, right next to the automatic doors (from the baggage carrousel). They offer regular and private shuttles to Temuco at $30.000 pesos (USD $40 per vehicle).

You don’t need reservations and you can pay in Credit Card or Cash. The ATM’s is on second floor.

All their shuttle services will drop you off at the hotel or address you are staying in Temuco. 

Driving time is approximately 35 minutes.

For the pre-night stay, we recommend staying at Best Western Ferrat Hotel in Temuco city, which is well-located with lots of restaurants and other facilities just a short walk away.

Day 1

Temuco Airport - Arrival at Malalcahuello National Reserve

Our local team will meet you at Best Western Ferrat Hotel in Temuco. We’ll drive for approximately 2 hours to Curacautín, a small quaint village. This village is part of the UNESCO Kütralkura Geopark and the Biosphere Reserve “Araucarias”. We’ll arrive at a modern hotel with SPA located in a small ski resort.


Afterwards, we’ll take a warm-up hike to the incredible Christmas Crater at Lonquimay Volcano.

Time hiking: 1 to 3 hours depending on the route taken

Day 2

Cerro Coloradito trail hike

Today, we start hiking from the hotel. We’ll hike towards Cerro Coloradito, a natural view point of 4 volcanoes: Lonquimay, Llaima, Sierra Nevada and Villarrica.


The hike is quite fun, with fantastic views and almost no other people in the trails. In addition, we’ll be surrounded by an ancient forest of araucaria trees, some of them dating over 2.000 years old.

Day 3

Conguillío National Park – Truful-Truful & Woodpeckers trail hikes

Today, we'll drive towards Conguillio National Park, passing through old-fashioned little towns. This park is one of the most attractive and outstanding in the Lake & Volcano District.


Upon arrival, we'll visit the Truful-Truful Canyon and its waterfall, where we can see 13.000 years of eruptive activity of Llaima volcano. We'll visit the pristine Arco Iris Lake with its clear waters reflecting stunning colors. 


Afterwards, we'll hike a very beautiful trail called the Woodpecker’s trail, where you can spot the Magellan woodpecker, which we will see searching the tree trunks for insects.

Day 3

Conguillío National Park - Sierra Nevada trail hike

After breakfast, we will have a short drive passing by two lakes: Verde (green) and Arcoiris (rainbow) and with us immersed in a jaw-opening landscape.


We’ll start hiking along the Sierra Nevada trail surrounded by native trees, including ancient monkey-puzzle trees or araucarias. We will hear and spot many endemic birds such as the chucao tapaculo, the Magellan woodpecker and the noisy slender-billed parakeet.


The trail is equipped with 3 view points and we’ll use them all. Each one of them with different angles to take-in the views of the Conguillío Lake, Llaima and Sierra Nevada volcanoes.

After spending some time eating our packed lunch, taking pictures and enjoying the amazing view, we’ll hike back to the bottom of the trail and visit Playa Linda.

After the hike, transfer to Pucón, Chile’s capital of adventure tourism & best place for outdoor excursions.

Day 4

Villarrica National Park - Lagos Andinos trail hike

In the morning, we'll head to the heart of The Andes Mountains, driving to the border with Argentina. There, we'll be surrounded by an ancient forest of araucaria trees. 


There, we’ll start hiking surrounded by an ancient forest of araucaria trees towards the Andean lakes located at the foot of Lanín Volcano, the highest in Lake & Volcano district.


Finally, we’ll have the unique experience to share a dinner with the Colipi Family, part of the Mapuche community. They will be our host this evening as they will cook for us and share their ancestral culture and cosmovision.

Day 6

Villarrica Volcano Climb

Ascending the active Villarrica Volcano is without a doubt a once in a lifetime experience, the climb is not technical, but you need to be in good shape to reach the summit. 


From ski center located at the base of the volcano (1.400 meters above sea level), we begin ascending the slopes of the volcano, stopping briefly every 30 minutes, having a longer break to eat our food when we are half way to the crater. 


After 4 or 5 hours spent hiking, we’ll reach the live crater (2.847 meters above sea level). The views from the top are absolutely mind-blowing, overlooking five lakes and several volcanoes in the distance such as Llaima and Lanín. 


The descent is quite fun, especially when we can slide down the snow on our rear ends.

This mountain activity is subject to weather conditions. If they don't allow the ascent due to bad forecast, we'll change this hike for another.

Day 7

Pichillancahue Glacier Trail Hike & Geométricas hot springs

Today we’ll hike another part of the Villarrica National Park We will see several majestic snow-capped volcanoes such as Quetrupillan and Rucapillan. The vegetation changes from rauli and hualle forests (Nothofagus trees) to gigantic thousand-year old araucarias as we ascend to the higher point of the day at 1.250m above sea level. 


This amazing trail leads us towards Pichillancahue, a phenomenal glacier which is absolutely covered by the blackish volcanic ashes of the Villarrica volcano. 


After the hike, we’ll visit the fantastic Geometricas Hot Springs. This place offers the perfect combination between thermal facilities and natural surroundings. Located in the environs of the park, Termas Geometricas has 16 strategically located thermal pools, allowing the visitors to never feel overcrowded. The natural surroundings are exuberant and the facilities are simple but very cozy.

Day 8

Pucón - Transfer to Temuco Airport

Sadly, it’s time to say good bye to the beautiful Lake & Volcano District of Chile. 

According to flight schedule, private transfer from hotel to Temuco Airport (ZCO).
