 Why Volunteering at the Rhino Sanctuary Matters:

 Spending a week volunteering at Uganda’s Rhino Sanctuary directly supports crucial conservation efforts aimed at protecting one of Africa’s most endangered species. Your contribution helps fund anti-poaching patrols, habitat restoration, and community education initiatives. Beyond the physical work, your presence raises awareness and adds international support to the sanctuary’s mission, making a lasting impact on the future of rhino conservation. 

Volunteering 

1. You will be accommodated in a twin room. Depending on the number of volunteers at the time, you may be required to share a room. Males and females will not be put in the same room

unless specifically requested. All rooms are fully supplied with bedding, mosquito nets, and lighting.

2. Bathrooms are shared and have hot water showers and flushing toilets. There are 4 stalls in each bathroom; the showers have towel hooks and toiletry holders. All the water in the bathrooms is safe and bilharzia-free as it is pumped daily from our borehole.

3. You are expected to do your laundry (make sure you bring washing powder along with you).

Should you require that your laundry be done by a sanctuary staff member, this must be arranged with your Education Manager after arrival at the sanctuary. There will be a fee payable; your Education Manager will advise you. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES may you arrange this privately with any sanctuary staff member and/or pay tips for this to be done. Room inspection will be done regularly by your Education Manager.

4. All your meals will be provided to you by our resident cook. Your meals will be wholesome and tasty but basic. All our meat is purchased in Kampala and is kept frozen at all times. If you have any dietary restrictions, please make sure you inform us well in advance so that we can prepare.

5. We suggest that on arrival at the sanctuary, you hand in any passports, ID documents, or any other valuable items to the Executive Director to be locked in the safe. No one other than the Executive Director will have access to that safe should you wish to remove anything.

You will be met at Entebbe International Airport and transferred to your hotel/guesthouse for an overnight.

Check in and relax in your warm and friendly African surroundings.

Depending on the flights, there are optional activities to take part in.

a) Visit the botanical garden located near Lake Victoria. The garden dates from 1898, and the rainforest was used as a backdrop for several scenes in the Tarzan films from the early 1940s. In addition to several vegetation zones, there are several

species of monkeys and birds. 

b) Visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) – Formerly the Zoo. The two-

hour educational adventure offers special inside-look tours and interesting information about how we take care of our residents (animals and birds). You will have a close-up and personal encounter with the lions, elephants, plus many more wonders you have perhaps never imagined meeting. 

c) Short Entebbe Town tour.

Volunteer Program

Places of interest in Kampala include: Kabaka’s (Buganda King’s) Palace, Old Kampala Mosque, and Nakasero Market, the King's Lake (man-made lake), which is one of the oldest markets in Uganda.

At the ranch, there are various activities to take part in per day. The program is not a course but an exciting experience that gives individuals the opportunity to complete practical hours, gain knowledge or simply help conserve these magnificent animals while working with dedicated rangers and staff. A basic outline of each subject is done, however, the program is mostly hands-on practical work.

At leisure, transfer to Murchison Falls National Park.

On your second day in the park, you will have a game searching safari, returning to the lodge a little later for a hearty breakfast. During the game drive, the following animals are likely to be sighted: elephants, antelopes, giraffes, lion prides, and buffalo herds. For bird lovers, the secretary bird and black chested snake eagle inhabit this park, though they are elusive.

In the afternoon, take part in the River Nile boat cruise, which goes right to the base of the falls. During the cruise, a lot of hippos and elephants can be seen by the shoreline. There are also bird varieties to be seen, like bee-eaters (carmine, little, red-throated, and swallow-tailed), kingfishers, black-crowned night heron, red-necked falcon, harrier hawk, brown snake, eagle, and fish eagle.

You have an option to disembark and hike to the top of the falls. The hike is fairly easy, and the view from the top is well worth every effort.

After breakfast, or a little later, start the drive back to Entebbe. The rest of the drive will take you to Entebbe International Airport for your flight to your next destination. Or back home.
