About this trip

Learn to make beautiful travel journals and books!

The animation is focused on the image (with Michel), on the text  (with Emmanuelle) but especially on the fusion of the two media in  layouts presented by the two animators.

Different writing and illustration exercises are offered daily.

Retreat's language: French

Full description

The course is suitable for participants of all levels whether they have already held travel journals or not.

Confirmed notebooks are asked to bring some examples of their  notebooks to enrich the subject. Training material is provided on site.

Nevertheless, we propose to everyone to arrive with his usual  equipment: pencils, watercolor, ink of India, etc etc ..., what to write  and, especially, to acquire a notebook before the departure. The  evenings will be free, to allow time for individual writing, reading,  discussion or exchange.

More specifically, the course addresses:

  • History and theory of travel diaries
  • Collages and layouts exercises
  • Exercises and writing ideas
  • Practice and tips for sketches
  • Practice and advice for photography
  • Narrative exercises, in words and pictures
  • Sharing practices and ideas

Benefits

  • The ideal location to unplug and enjoy the beauty of nature
  • Drop out of “normal life” for a period
  • A chance to get away and step aside from all the hustle and bustle of city life
  • The ideal place to unplug, slow down that fast pace, and get back in touch with nature

Teachers

Michel Kraft

Michel is a photographer and handles the sketch  as others are fluent in a foreign language. Image director at the  zoology museum, he is at ease with photography, India ink, crayons or  charcoal. From his distant travels (India) or near (Italy, Glarus), he  brings back sketchbooks.

Self-taught, he has a great curiosity for techniques and  technologies. Today, it is also on his iPad and thanks to all kinds of  App that he lives every day to the rhythm of the travel diary.

Emmanuelle Ryser

Emmanuelle is fond of notebooks: diaries since her childhood,  thematic book on theater or family album, personal guide of Paris and  travel journals. The smallest stay abroad gives rise to a few written  pages, colored and animated collages.

A former journalist, she worked 10 years in museum communication  before creating her own business in creative writing. Her activity is  now divided between publishing life stories, travel journal, and  creative writing workshops.

Location

Bab Zouina is an ode to nature.
The workshop will take place in Bab Zouina, a beautiful traditional  Moroccan villa situated in the Ourika Valley (30 km from Marrakesh) in a  magnificent property surrounded by olive trees.
Far from urban stress, Bab Zouina has kept an authentic and serene spirit, respectful of the environment.
The main house is ecologically built with cut stone and the new  buildings with natural mud bricks. The material used is entirely  traditional: tadellakt on the wall, zellij on the floor and cedar and  acacia for the woodwork.
The estate is full of terraces and peaceful places to recharge your  batteries. The botanical and aromatic gardens surrounding the property  give the place a poetic charm and invite to a gentle meditation.
The amazing Swedish artist and landscape designer, Catharina von  Unge, conceived and designed the ornamental garden surrounding the  property. She managed to combine British aesthetic taste with rusticity  and simplicity of the place.
With the Mexican corner and its incredible varieties of cactuses,  Catharinadares hints at the Majorelle garden by Yves Saint Laurent and  the neighboring garden by André Heller.

Karim Zein
As a kid I was born in Beirut, I then studied in Lebanon and Switzerland. After 20 years working in the environment protection and development field (travelling to most Arab countries and some African countries), I have chosen, in 2012, to launch an eco-tourism project in the Ourika valley (30 km away from Marrakesh, Morocco), Bab Zouina (yoga, nature & retreat). I love hiking in the mountains, playing tennis and enjoy travelling & discovering new places and new cultures.
