If you've been painting with acrylics for some time or are new to the medium, this class is designed for you. You'll dive right into exploring this versatile medium. Experienced painters will enhance their skills with my insights on acrylic techniques, while newcomers will develop a strong foundation. All skill levels will gain experience in landscape painting and design. Please arrive an hour early on the first day to set up, as we'll be diving in right away.

Syllabus

First Day & 1/2: The Source of Light and portraying volume and perspective.

We will practice blending colors and adjusting values with acrylic paint. This will be done on basic elements of a landscape, such as trees, bushes, rocks, water, hills and mountains etc. Aerial perspective and linear perspective and integrating a light source will help you bring life to your landscape. Prepare an interesting ground and plan a landscape painting. We will use a variety of neutrals to vary color andvalues. Photos will be provided to practice from or you can bring your own. Painting exercises can be performed on watercolor paper or canvas paper.

2 nd Afternoon and 3 rd Day - Create your own Landscape.

We will compose and paint a landscape with some architecture using two modified colors.

Plan a color scheme that pulls your painting together using analogous color to move the eye and contrast to make your work pop. There will be extra photocopies if you want to paint the same subject as me, or you can bring your own. Start your painting on a canvas 16” x 20” or larger or 140 lb watercolor paper.

Diederich teaching style

We focus on the basics of painting and integrate into what we are work on. The goal of this workshop is to give you techniques and skills that will help you design and create paintings on your own. Design will be used to assist with creative problem solving.   Lesson plans are very simple, yet useful.  I encourage you to have an open mind and a willingness to learn. Students are welcome to bring in examples of both their favorite paintings as well as works they want help with. Keep some scraps of watercolor paper handy so I can personally show you some ways to solve problems.
