Join Blue Planet for a long weekend of diving and relaxing in beautiful, quiet Mahahual, Mexico. The southern end of the Yucatan Peninsula is the perfect place to get away from it all: gorgeous beaches, great diving and snorkeling, mysterious cenotes, and plenty of top-side adventure.
A 3.5-hour drive south of the Cancun airport, Mahahual is the perfect beach getaway. This is not touristy Cancun, or even Playa del Carmen or Tulum; this small fishing village has managed to maintain its local culture and charm despite its growing popularity.
Minimum dive certification/experience: Perfect for beginners. A great spot to complete your Open Water Diver certification, Advanced Open Water Diver and more.
Mahahual sits on the magnificent Meso-American Barrier Reef System, the largest barrier reef system in the Northern Hemisphere and second in size only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The reef along the Costa Maya is made up of canyons and swim-throughs, and with only a very slight current to the north, the diving is suitable for beginners and/or experienced divers. Visibility averages 80ft, and water temperature averages 81*F.
Common marine life found in the area includes turtles, lobsters, moray eels, king crabs, various stingrays, the occasional nurse shark, barracuda, as well as most varieties of tropical Caribbean reef fish such as damsels, butterfly fish, pork fish, parrotfish and wrasses. Night dives are particularly spectacular; as well as the odd octopus, honeycomb moray eels are very common, as are lobsters, shrimp and crabs. Plus look forward to countless types of hard and soft corals, nudibranchs and mollusks.
We’ll be diving with our fabulous friends at Dreamtime Dive Resort, a PADI dive center focused on diver safety, ocean conservation and fun!
There’s plenty to keep you occupied top side as well. Visit ancient Mayan ruins, kayak through the mangroves, hike jungle trails, explore nearby cenotes, cruise the malecon or relax on the beach.
The Forty Cannons resort is located right on the beach in Mahahual. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks in the spacious hotel courtyard overlooking the ocean. It’s also centrally located and walking distance from the dive shop, restaurants, and the center of town. All rooms have wireless internet, air conditioning, private bathrooms, etc.
You should plan to fly into Cancun (CUN) airport on Saturday, November 2nd before 2 PM. From there, it's a 3.5-hour ride to Mahahual on a private bus with the group. Depending on timing, we can stop in Tulum for a break to visit Mayan ruins or dinner.
You can fly home on Wednesday, November 6th after 12 PM. (We still have to take a shuttle back to Cancun that morning!) Please email or call the shop before booking your flight!
