About this trip

Join AfroLatinx Travel for a special AfroBrazil journey this January exploring the history, culture, spirituality, and brilliance of Black Brazil.

This unique trip is perfectly timed to end just two days before Salvador’s legendary Yemanjá Festival on February 2nd, giving travelers the incredible opportunity to extend their stay and experience one of Bahia’s most sacred celebrations. Even better, you’ll already be in Salvador ahead of the start of Carnival on February 5th — the perfect chance to continue immersing yourself in the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture, music, and tradition.

We begin in São Paulo, a city of striking contradictions where grey towering skyscrapers shadow vibrant Afro-Brazilian cultural enclaves, and where resistance echoes through historiography, art, music, and memory. Although Sao Paulo has been whitewashed in its national narratives, it actually is one of the biggest centers of Black people in the Americas. From there, we travel to Salvador, Bahia—the Black capital of Brazil—where we are called into communion with ancestral memory. Together, we will walk the cobblestone streets of Pelourinho, visit community-led cultural and historical projects, and learn from local organizers, artists, and leaders. This is not just a trip—it is Intentional memory work through the histories and present-day lives of Afrodescendants in Brazil, centering their struggles, joys, and radical imaginaries.

We will be visiting São Paulo for three nights and Salvador Bahia for six nights. Your flight from São Paulo to Bahia is covered in the trip price but your flight from Salvador to São Paulo is not, to allow flexibility for those who may want to extend their trip. In-country flights average between $100-$200 from Salvador to São Paulo. Recommended carriers are GOL and LatAm.

Accommodations are double-occupancy. Once we finalize the total trip count, single occupancy may be available.

This trip is educational in nature and centers the history and contemporary lives of Afrodescendants in Brazil. There are direct and one-stop flights from major cities in the U.S. to São Paulo. We recommend flying in a full day before or taking a flight in the evening the day prior to the start of the tour on January 21. Our first activity to kick-off our time together is our welcome dinner on January 21.

Independent days are for the participant to spend however they wish.

This trip is on a first come, first served basis. Your spot is reserved with your deposit which is immediately non-refundable. Initial deposit is followed by four installment payments or you have the option to pay in full. Your installment payments become non-refundable five days after payment.  Any and all trip drop-outs will not be reimbursed nor re-scheduled.

Participants are required to attend monthly meetings, we will have at least three, to become familiar with cultural norms, etiquette, and expectations while in Brazil, ensuring respectful, informed, and considerate engagement throughout the experience.

Mutual aid is also required where we will respond to the local needs of a community grassroots organization.

We want serious participants only who will make the commitment to attend the trip, participate in prep and experience the trip in all its fullness. We are not interested in uptight, petulant, nonchalant, disinterested nor non-mindful travelers. We want participants who are mindful of the space they take up, considerate of others and themselves and want to be in equitable community with others.

All participants are required to sign a liability waiver upon sign-up. Trip insurance is recommended on your own and up to your own discretion.

Itinerary is dynamic and flexible and final itinerary will be updated a week prior to the trip.
