AfroPeru: Lima, El Carmen & the Desert

Experience Peru through the history, culture, and living traditions of its African-descended communities during Afro-Peruvian Culture Month.

This seven-day journey takes us from Lima to El Carmen and Peru’s spectacular coastal desert, tracing the presence, resistance, creativity, and cultural production of Afro-Peruvians from the colonial period to the present.

In Lima, we explore the often-overlooked Black histories embedded in Peru’s capital and experience the food, music, neighborhoods, and cultural spaces shaped by Afro-Peruvian life. We then travel south to El Carmen, Chincha, one of the country’s most important centers of Afro-Peruvian culture. Here, we learn directly from the community about histories of enslavement and resistance, family and community traditions, and the music and dance forms—including festejo and zapateo—that have become emblematic of Afro-Peruvian cultural expression.

The journey also takes us into Peru’s extraordinary desert landscape for an unforgettable experience among the towering sand dunes of the Ica region, adding adventure and natural beauty to a trip grounded in history and cultural immersion.

As with every AfroLatinx Travel experience, this is not simply a vacation. It is an intentional journey centered on Black history, local knowledge, community connection, and the people whose contributions have profoundly shaped Peru.

Independent days are for the participant to spend however they wish.

This trip is on a first come, first served basis. Your spot is reserved with your deposit which is immediately non-refundable. Initial deposit is followed by four installment payments or you have the option to pay in full. Your installment payments become non-refundable five days after payment.  Any and all trip drop-outs will not be reimbursed nor re-scheduled. 

Participants are required to attend monthly meetings, we will have at least three, to become familiar with cultural norms, etiquette, and expectations while in Brazil, ensuring respectful, informed, and considerate engagement throughout the experience.

Mutual aid is also required where we will respond to the local needs of a community grassroots organization.

We want serious participants only who will make the commitment to attend the trip, participate in prep and experience the trip in all its fullness. We are not interested in uptight, petulant, nonchalant, disinterested nor non-mindful travelers. We want participants who are mindful of the space they take up, considerate of others and themselves and want to be in equitable community with others. This trip is different, so let it be.

All participants are required to sign a liability waiver upon sign-up. Trip insurance is recommended on your own and up to your own discretion.

Itinerary is dynamic and flexible and final itinerary will be updated a few week prior to the trip.

Welcome to Lima! Fly into LIM (Jorge Chávez International Airport) Get your transfers to the group hotel.

We will have our welcome dinner at an AfroPeruvian restaurant in the city. Our recommendation is to fly in early that day or even the day before, so you are rested, ready and present for the welcome dinner.

Our only activity is the welcome dinner.

We visit notable AfroPeruvian sites throughout Lima while learning about the people, movements, and cultural traditions that have shaped the city. We will also support Black-owned businesses by young Afro-Peruvian entrepreneurs and activists.

The day is yours to spend as you wish. Explore Lima’s museums, neighborhoods, restaurants, and coastline—or simply relax and enjoy the city at your own pace.

We depart Lima early and make our way to El Carmen, one of the areas in Peru carrying forth AfroPeruvian culture in Chincha. We will commemorate Afro-Peruvian Culture Day by experiencing local cultural events and community celebrations.

El Carmen is 3-4 hour ride from Lima.

We travel to the Huacachina Oasis for an adventurous day among the spectacular sand dunes of the Ica Desert. Experience an exhilarating dune buggy ride, try sandboarding, and take in the breathtaking desert landscape landscape views before returning back to El Carmen.

Huacachina is 1.5 hours from El Carmen.

Breakfast and dinner included

We depart El Carmen and return to Lima, where we will gather for a special farewell dinner to reflect on our journey, celebrate the connections we have made, and enjoy one final evening together.

Our Afro-Peru journey comes to an end. Participants depart Lima and return home carrying new knowledge, meaningful connections, and lasting memories.
