Akumal, Mexico

Akumal means "Place of the Turtle" in the Mayan language, and when you snorkel here, you just might see one swimming alongside you. You’ll definitely see coral and beautiful fish in the clear, sparkling waters. This friendly little town is about 45 minutes to an hour south of Cancun—but it seems light-years away.

Akumal is located on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, at the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Celebrated for its white sand beaches, coral reefs, warm water and rich marine life it’s popular with divers, nature lovers, and sea lovers from around the world.

Located 100 km south of Cancun, between the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum it’s a prime location for your next retreat and adventure.

Choosing Akumal means that we will be within close proximity to all of the regions top cenotes, ruins, and attractions.

To the north of Akumal, Half Moon Bay has a curved beach, while Yal-ku Lagoon teems with colorful tropical fish, plus stingrays and barracudas. Inland, Aktun Chen Parque Natural is known for its caves, cenotes (freshwater pools) and underground river.

Tulum, Mexico

***We will be heading over to Tulum for a day in the pueblo and beach zone and town to shop, explore, enjoy some incredible restaurants, and explore. We will also be heading over to Tulum for several adventures.

Tulum is a Magic Town that provides a spiritual and relaxing sensation. With an eco-chic atmosphere, it is the perfect place to enjoy peace and tranquility. With beautiful white sand beaches, lagoons, cenotes, and caverns that show the beauty of nature in all its splendor. The archaeological site, the hotel zone, and the town are the three areas that make up Tulum

With beautiful white sand beaches and palm trees, turquoise blue sea, spectacular lagoons, cenotes, rivers and underwater caverns as well as imposing archeological sites that make it a unique destination in the Mexican Caribbean.

Tulum is a destination of unique gastronomic experiences that are enjoyed in spectacular settings. It offers exquisite international and regional cuisine in restaurants with a concept where nature is the main element.

Tulum provides the ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking for an intimate experience with nature, local culture, fresh seafood, and of course, a little tequila should you choose to enjoy. Stay by the beach, practice yoga, or lay in a hammock and read. And when you’re ready for a little adventure, it’s never far.

COVID 19

I care deeply about the well-being of every student, of our communities, and of humankind in general so we will be taking precautions to ensure the most safe, nourishing, easeful, and meaningful retreat experience for all.

We will be staying on top of how Covid progresses in Mexico and the area we'll be in, the CDC suggestions, county Covid policies, and will be asking that everyone attending the retreat either provide their proof of vaccination OR take a Covid test within 72 hours of attending and provide negative results so that we can move through the retreat more safely and with greater peace of mind.

It is best to be vaccinated for this retreat as several places in Tulum require proof of vaccination to enter like restaurants, social spots, etc so you will need to bring your vaccination card or proof of it, with you to enter certain places.

We will be wearing masks when out and about in town, or when we cannot distance from others, social distancing, taking on-your-honor daily temp checks individually, washing hands frequently, and will make sure to be careful in the days and weeks leading up to the retreat, as as we travel to and from the retreat.

Thank you and I look forward to practicing with you soon in Mexico, xo

Mary Susan Stults

Been hanging out on the yoga mat since 1991.

Born in Fort Payne, Alabama, I was raised in Cedar City, a town in southwest Utah about an hour from Zion National Park. An avid nature lover, I grew up exploring the many hiking trails, rivers, rocks, mountains, canyons, and the endless outdoor beauty of Utah and Colorado with my family and friends. Despite growing up landlocked I grew up with a deep love and appreciation for the ocean and water and that passion has only grown with each passing year. After moving to Boulder, Colorado in 2001 to attend the University of Colorado-Boulder, I made Colorado my mountain home for over 20 years until I traded the mountain life for the island life and moved to Hawaii in 2018 to the Garden Island Kauai.

My yoga and meditation practice and path began with my mother as a child at home in 1991 and continued in the studio at the age of 14 in 1997 with the practice of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Sri. K Pattabhi Jois. I practiced Hatha, Ashtanga Yoga, and Iyengar Yoga as taught by BKS Iyengar throughout highschool and early college and in 2002 began practicing at Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor's studio, the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado.

Years later I had the blessing and great fortune to be introduced and led to Master and Mentor-Teacher Maty Ezraty with whom I studied intensively, mentored with, and assisted until her recent passing. Over thousands of hours and many years of study, mentoring, and practice, Maty influenced my practice and life on and off the yoga mat greatly and will forever be my greatest teacher and influence. Maty encouraged and influenced me to delve deeper into the yoga practice and approach both the daily practice of yoga and life from the subtle body. Over the years I have had the opportunity to practice and learn with many wonderful yoga and meditation teachers aside from Maty including Dharma Mittra, Judith Hanson Lasater, Richard Freeman, Seane Corn, Peter Doobinin, Carrie Owerko, James Brown, Jack Kornfeild, and many others. I look forward to studying with Chuck Miller and Dona Holleman in the future.

I teach internationally and in the U.S and am a certified 500+HR E RYT Yoga & Meditation teacher, educator, and practitioner, a WPA/Paddle Into Fitness Certified Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and SUP Yoga teacher, certified Kids Yoga teacher, certified Adaptive Yoga teacher, and am known by all for my enthusiasm, heart, and positive outlook. I teach a knowledgeable, dynamic, refreshing, and compassionate alignment-based yoga practice that intelligently weaves together the traditions of Iyengar Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga. Many describe my energy as contagious, finding my nurturing, wise, soulful, & patient style of teaching to be welcoming & supportive to all. For me being a student of the practice of yoga is as important as being a teacher, we are students first, and teachers second.

Expect the teachings to be greatly reflective of Maty Ezraty, Sri. K Pattabhis Jois, and BKS Iyengar, as well as from my near 30 years of practice, and classes are open to anyone ready to explore more deeply. I invite all students to let go of expectations, to be truly curious and compassionate, and to embrace and befriend an explorer's mindset within our own inner ecology. I approach and understand yoga as a spiritual practice and discipline and a healing art. We learn to trust our own intuition and innate wisdom, "we do not learn to be intuitive, we already are." The Yoga practice is a re-remembering and recognition of our wholeness and of the truth that we are always evolving, transforming, and are under constant construction; there is infinite room for learning, progressing, and creative expression. The practice offers a moment to awaken and a continuing opportunity to return home to the beauty of our own being and self. As a friend says, "This practice intends to provoke us & to inspire the bigger questions triggering one’s own awakening…the truth is-It is never complete, it is never finished, it’s infinite."

I wholeheartedly believes that Yoga, Meditation, and Stand Up Paddleboarding, and SUP Yoga are for everybody, and am passionate about sharing these gifts, as well as my love of nature, adventure, travel, living well, environmentalism, ocean conservation, and the outdoors with all ages.

This trip was so great!! I had the pleasure of attending this trip in the past and couldn't wait to attend again. things have only gotten better since I last went. All of the accommodations were great, close to shops and events, and the activities are well thought out and things I would not have thought of myself. The paddle along the cliff sides is breathtaking, and the VIP experience at Cova d'en Xoroi is a once in a lifetime experience. i wouldn't hesitate to attend more Trips with Mary Susan.

Thank you, Mary for the experience of a lifetime! Mary was very prepared for any and all circumstances during our many adventures, most of which I can personally say gave me the assurance and comfort to have the best day ever on our excursions. Mary provided all dietary accommodations offered at each food venue, gave valuable insights on local customs and celebrations, personally vetted and obtained trusting relationships with all activity guides, prioritized safety protocols, and prepared a backup plan for all the weather interruptions on the trip. More importantly, at each major point in the trip she was conscious of each person’s needs for well being and rest. I personally could not have had a successful boating excursion without her peppermint oil and her guidance on how to position oneself on the boat. I also appreciated when, after seeing our state of being after a full day, she offered a lovely and deeply thoughtful meditation instead of her personalized yoga class (which I can attest gives invaluable insight into improving foundational yoga poses). I want to note that her yoga practice is not strictly abiding, and she values the allowance and space to move in a way that suits each body and mind. With no stone unturned, she offered a wide array of accessible yoga and meditation resources after the trip with thoughtful detail via email, and shared amazing photos that we could all view on all devices. Everyday offered something new and exciting, as she allowed space on the itinerary to offer some fun evening activities based on special events. We were in awe of Barcelona and Menorca for its beauty and its people. I’m grateful for Mary’s nurturing and knowledgeable approach to all her activities, as well as the friendships formed with each lovely woman on the trip. If you want countless opportunities for something your soul can smile about, I would go on one of her adventures.
