About this trip

Indulge in a transformative weekend retreat immersing yourself in the fascinating world of fiber processing, where we cover everything from home-based techniques to commercial processing.

Commencing with an exploration of fiber preparation, delve into the distinct characteristics of sheep wool and various natural fibers. Learn the art of washing all-natural fibers and discover the intricacies of dyeing, from raw fiber to vibrant yarns. Our comprehensive program includes insightful discussions on felting techniques and a step-by-step walkthrough of the entire processing journey – from picking and carding to drafting, spinning, plying, and skeining.

Wind down your evenings with delightful drinks by the fire, accompanied by engaging conversations with Chris and Teresa. Savor exquisite cuisine expertly crafted by our onsite chef, ensuring a truly immersive and worry-free experience – we've got everything covered, right down to your airport pickup!

Join us for a memorable Saturday evening, featuring refreshing drinks and a chance to address any lingering questions by the crackling fire.

The retreat kicks off at 5 pm on Friday with check-in, culminating at 1 pm on Sunday. No prior experience is necessary; we are dedicated to teaching you all you need to know and provide all the materials required for an enriching and enjoyable weekend getaway.

Chris Armbrust

Since 2010, Chris has been the driving force behind Dakota Fiber Mill, where she transformed fibers from a variety of furry friends—sheep, alpaca, goat, camel, bison, and more—into exquisite yarn and roving. But Chris's passion doesn't end with spinning; in 2017, she collaborated with four engineering students from NDSU to introduce a felting machine to the mill. This innovation allowed her to turn waste and short fibers into an array of delightful products.

Teaming up with Teresa Perleberg, founder of Bear Creek Felting, Chris took her creative endeavors to new heights. Together, they founded Shepherd Industries, LLC, in 2018. The dynamic duo purchased the abandoned Nome Schoolhouse and spent three years transforming it into a wool enthusiast's dream destination. The schoolhouse now houses not only their individual businesses but also a retail store showcasing their unique products. The icing on the cake? Purpose-built classrooms for makers, and a boutique hotel with an in-house chef for those wanting an immersive experience.

In a true embodiment of community spirit, Chris and Teresa also established the Nome Eweniversity Non-Profit, an organization dedicated to providing a rural, inclusive, farm-to-needle experience. Nestled in the heart of the Nome Schoolhouse, this non-profit is committed to inspiring future makers, artists, and growers.

WOW! My mom & I went to this retreat not knowing much about wool or any fibers at all. Wow has that changed! In our group there were folks who had their own flocks of sheep and alpaca, Chris would give specific information relating to their animals while still managing to not go over my head. Everyone on staff was incredibly generous with their time and their resources. We walked away with an entire garbage bag of art supplies AND a full belly- I think I'm still full after two days! On our way home, we were planning who would we would bring with us for the next retreat. ❤️ Chris, Teresa, & their team deserve all the success that comes their way.

I had a wonderful time! The Nome schoolhouse is amazing along with the people there! A great place for a retreat and classes. This was the second time I was as Nome and look forward to my next visit. The knitting classes with Cori were amazing! A beautiful woman inside and out filled with so much knowledge and an excellent way of teaching. She was always watching each participant to see if they had questions or were having issues completing the stitches. Before you knew it, she was standing beside you with a gentle hint that solved the problem. After teaching for 30 years, I noticed her natural love of her work and her natural way of passing on that information. I look forward to having the opportunity to take more classes from her.

Overall the knitting retreat experience was wonderful. Cori did an excellent job educating the class on a multiple number of new techniques including Latvian braid, beaded hat, 50 shades of sweaters fit/flatter and tips/tricks for more efficient knitting. The group stayed engaged throughout the class time. I would recommend Cori's classes to anyone who wants to learn more in-depth knitting skills. I enjoyed meeting the Nome Schoolhouse staff. Rhonda took great care of our group. The shop was filled with lots of great gift items. I spent more than I thought I would!
