About this trip

The Altar (5319 m. / 17.451 ft.) is one the most spectacular mountains  of Ecuador. The Incas called it Capac Urcu - sublime mountain. A long  time ago, El Altar was the highest volcano of Ecuador, and some studies  even say that it was the highest of the world. A huge eruption almost  completely destroyed the cone, leaving 9 snow-capped summits in a  horseshoe shape around an enormous crater lake. El Altar is part of the  Sangay National Park, that is home to spectacled bears,  condors, Andean  gulls, white-tailed deers and foxes.

Hike to Collanes Refuge

We leave Riobamba at 8.30. After a 1-hour drive we reach a hacienda near  the entrance of Sangay National Park, at 3070 m. / 10.072 ft. altitude.  We put our equipment on pack horses and start the hike. If the weather  is clear, after some time we will enjoy the first views of the volcano  and the valley of Collanes river. We hike for about 6 hours until we  reach the Collanes shelter at 3830 m. / 12.566 ft., where we will spend  the night.

My husband and I did the 3-day Inca Trail trek, with Marciel as our guide. It was fantastic! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and patient. We both experienced mild altitude sickness during the beginning of the hike, and our guide made sure we continued at a comfortable pace and made recommendations along the way. The food was great, and we learned so much about the history of the trail and the region. The camping equipment works well and is very comfortable. The horsemen work really hard to ensure everything is set up in advance. Highly recommend this trek and the tour operator. They are very professional and answered a lot of questions in advance of the trip.

I had an amazing day with four other participants and our guide! I enjoyed the 1.5 hours we had to hike around the first and second refugios at Chimborazo, and then the biking part of the day was even better. I got to choose if I wanted to bike on the road or off-road, and I'm so glad I picked the latter. I rarely book tours, but I can say that though it was a bit pricey, I am so glad I did this while in Ecuador.

Our family had a great tour of Chimborazo. The views were stunning! We enjoyed the 2km hike, which gave us a small taste of what hiking is like at 16,000ft! The bike ride down on Route 2 was a blast. It was a mix of dirt roads, fun, loose trails, and pavement. Miguel was friendly and helpful! The bike tour is a perfect way to experience Chimborazo!
