After breakfast we will make a trip by boat and land vehicle to Puerto Maldonado, once in the town you have some free time to relax and enjoy a tasty lunch.
After lunch, we will leave and cruise the Madre de Dios river for 30 minutes until we reach the trail that leads to Sandoval lake, then take a 3 km hike to the banks of the lake. There we will board a canoe to paddle around the lake enjoying the beauty of the landscape and observing the wildlife, such as kingfishers, herons, hoatzins (unique pre-historic looking birds), monkeys, etc. If we are lucky, we could see the family of giant otters which live at the lake.
Included activity - Sandoval Lake Guided Tour:
If you are a nature lover, then you cannot miss this beautiful place for anything. Sandoval Lake is the largest oxbow lake in Peru. Sandoval Lake’s environment makes it an extremely attractive area, due to a high abundance of Mauritia palm trees, which form swampy areas called aguajales. These trees create a fantastic backdrop to the lake and provide habitat for a number of different animals and plants but the lake is also home to giant Amazon fish called Arapaima, black caiman, and a resident family of one of the most endangered species of mammals in South America: giant river otters.
You can also enjoy spotting titi monkeys, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, tamarins and howler monkeys.
The bird life to be seen at Sandoval Lake is also fantastic. Enjoy spotting macaws, cormorants, toucans, a diversity of herons, and hoatzin.
As the sun begins to set we will initiate our walk back and then cruise back to the hotel.
After dinner you will be able to rest or enjoy the pool and its cascade surrounded by verdant vegetation. Rest of the night free to enjoy the nightlife of this welcoming city.
