On the “Amazon Wildlife Adventure” you will explore the Amazonian rainforests in Colombia and Peru as you immerse yourself in and learn about the natural splendour of this region as well as its indigenous cultures by visiting various local communities.
Note: we recommend you arrive early for this tour.
After welcoming you at the airport we take a taxi down the road leading to Terapacá where we will begin an ecological walk of 2 hours in the jungle to the indigenous Wayruru community. During the walk you will learn about timber trees, medicinal plants of the region and the various indigenous cultures and their customs practices.
Upon reaching the Maloca or traditional longhouse, known to the natives of the region as a place where meetings and traditional festivals are held, you will be received by the shaman or leader in charge. He will speak about the importance of this place within the tribe and the sacred substances that are used there such as Mambe, Coca, Rape, Ambil and ground tobacco. You can then enjoy a traditional lunch. This is followed by a visit to the “chagra”, the place where traditional crops such as cassava, banana, pineapple, the coca plant and tobacco are grown. You will get the chance to learn about regional cuisine while preparing dinner with community members. After dinner we can go on a night walk to see bioluminescent mushrooms and other fascinating animals and plants.
Accommodation in hammocks in a cabaña (hut)
Breakfast is followed by the hike back to the road where a taxi will be taking us to Leticia. We will take the public boat up the Amazon River until we reach Bocana de Arara. There a small boat will be waiting for us to take us to the Nature Reserve – Arara Ecolodge, which is surround by the two indigenous communities Arara of the Tikuna and the Maloca from the Yaguaa. In the Nature Reserve you will get the chance to join cultural activities such as a Huita workshop (natural dying) or the Yanchama Workshop or go fishing or we can take you on a hike.
After lunch, you will be able to do some canopying and see the jungle from above and go on an ecological walk learning more about the flora and fauna of the area.
Accommodation in cabañas (huts) or in hammocks in the jungle – you can decide
After breakfast we cross the Amazon River in a “Peke Peke” (a small wooden boat) over to Peru where we will visit the Natamu Nature Reserve, home of the indigenous Chinería community who live along the banks of the river with the same name. At Natamu, we will go on a nature walk, if the water level permits it. If the water level is too high we will explore the jungle by canoe or kayak. We can visit the indigenous community, go fishing or simply relax and soak in the beauty of the rainforest. After dinner we can go on a night walk or try and spot Caymans on a night boat trip.
