The Journey to El Dorado

Laguna Guatavita, Ancient Megaliths, and the Gold Museum

Day 2: The Path to El Dorado

We begin our day with a scenic two-hour drive north to Laguna Guatavita—a sacred lake once linked to the legendary tale of El Dorado. Spanish conquistadors believed immense treasures were hidden beneath its waters, and some of the most remarkable gold artifacts ever discovered in the Americas were recovered from its depths. These treasures are now housed in the Bogotá Gold Museum. The hike to the lake is short but requires a moderate level of fitness.

Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch in the charming village of Guatavita, surrounded by stunning mountain views.

Following lunch, we’ll travel just 25 minutes to a remote and seldom-visited site on the other side of the lake, where we’ll explore Megalithic Dolmens believed to have been constructed by ancient inhabitants of the region. Our exploration will be guided by local Indigenous experts.

We’ll return to Bogotá in the late afternoon to tour the world-famous Gold Museum, home to hundreds of pre-Columbian gold pieces from across Colombia’s ancient cultures.

The day concludes with dinner at a stylish local restaurant in Bogotá’s vibrant Chapinero neighborhood.

Day 3: Into the Amazon – Orion’s Gate

Our journey into the Amazon begins with a short flight from Bogotá to San José del Guaviare, the gateway to Colombia’s Amazon. After checking into our hotel, we’ll meet our local guide and set off into nature for an afternoon adventure.

Our destination is the beautiful River of Colors—a unique experience that is only possible to see during a certain part of the year.

We’ll return to town in the evening to enjoy a delicious dinner and sample the local flavors of San José del Guaviare. Tomorrow is the big day!

Exploring the AMAZING La Lindosa Pictograph Panel at Cerro Azul

Day 4: The Great Pictographs of La Lindosa

Today, we venture deep into the wilderness with our trusted English-speaking guide to witness one of the most extraordinary rock art sites in the Americas. High atop a massive Cerro rising from the Amazonian lowlands lies La Lindosa, home to thousands of ancient pictographs—some of which may depict extinct Ice Age animals.

This site is both visually breathtaking and archaeologically significant. For those feeling adventurous, there will be an optional opportunity to explore nearby jungle caves and take in sweeping panoramic views from the summit.

A moderate level of fitness is required for the hike and exploration.

Nuevo Tolima

Day 5: The Final Discovery – Nuevo Tolima

On our final day, we’ll visit the lesser-known but deeply powerful site of Nuevo Tolima—a hidden gem featuring even more stunning ancient rock art, tucked away in the remote jungle.

In the afternoon, we’ll return to San José del Guaviare for our flight back to Bogotá, officially concluding the tour.

An unforgettable way to end an extraordinary adventure.
