August is a great time to find migrating shorebirds on the beautiful South Carolina coast! We’ll begin our tour in Beaufort, SC and spend out first full day at Harbor Island where we will search the intertidal flats, tidal creeks, and beachfront for up to 18 species of shorebirds, including Red Knot and Piping Plover. Painted Buntings and Reddish Egrets will be likely too. On our way toward Charleston we will check tidal impoundments for shorebirds such as Stilt Sandpiper and Black-necked Stilt. In this area over 20 species of shorebirds can be observed and specialties such as Ruff, Wilson’s Phalarope, and American Golden Plover have been observed here in August. We will also get a chance to see most of the local gulls, terns, and wading birds. Another highlight of this trip will be a visit to Santee Coastal Reserve WMA, where over 31 shorebird species have been found in its thousands of acres of managed wetlands. Other specialties here include Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Bachman’s Sparrow, and other mature pine forest birds.
