About this trip

Away to Africa is excited to introduce our 'Best of Two Islands' Tour highlighting the beautiful islands of Lamu and Zanzibar just in time for end of the year celebrations.

You will begin this tour in Zanzibar, or the ‘black coast’, is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. Boasting beautiful beaches, Zanzibar is the perfect place to find relaxation.  Walk through the cobblestone streets of Stone Town before learning of the East African slave trade.  Wake up oceanfront in Nungwi, spend a day out in the ocean on our Safari Blue Tour and even spend time swimming with large sea turtles.

Next you will travel to the vibrant city of Nairobi for a couple of days before heading to the quaint archipelago of islands known as Lamu.  Spend time getting lost in the walkways of Old Lamu Town as this friendly town offers a hidden gem around every corner.  Enjoy a dhow experience as you sail through the mangroves or spend your time relaxing on the white sands of Manda Island...either way you will definitely leave with a piece of Lamu in your heart.

Ring in the New Year dancing on the beach under the stars of East Africa.  What better way to introduce a blissful year that 2023 has to offer?

If I could give Away to Africa 10 stars I would! They made my first (but not last) visit to Ghana very memorable! The thoughtfully curated itinerary included a number of culturally enriching experiences including a naming ceremony and a volunteer event in a local neighborhood that I’ll remember for a lifetime. The organizers were very responsive during the pre-planning process which contributed to the overall positive experience. So glad that I booked through Away to Africa and I plan on booking with them again this year! Highly recommend!

I had the most remarkable Africa 4 country tour with Away to Africa. Each itinerary was planned to make my trip most memorable. I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of my trip: from walking Africa's longest canopy walkway in Lagos, Nigeria to visiting the forts used during the slave trade that now serves as "The Door of Return" in Cape Coast. I took a refreshing dip in Boti Falls and experience Afrocella up close in the VVIP section, which was a great way to experience Africa's most talented artist. A quick boat ride to Togoville is where I tasted the sweetest bananas and learned of Germany's influence on the country and visited the monument to the German-African friendship. I was blown away by Ganvie, a unique lake village built on stilts. Lest I forget, the ethnic meals offered that featured Jollof rice cooked in the personal homes of local families.  And the highlight of my trip, being dressed as a queen to attend a Nigerian wedding. Every country and every new activity offered new experiences, too many to list. This definitely has become the most eye-opening, adventurous, and stunning journey of my life - something I will remember, draw upon, and cherish for many years to come. DeVonne Lampkin, Ed.D

My time in Ghana for Christmas and New Year was beyond words, but I'll try. Away to Africa curated a wonderful itinerary, full of opportunities to experience all that Ghana has to offer. There was a great mix of cultural and entertainment opportunities, so much so, I had to make difficult choices about what to participate in and what to save for my next visit. The highlights of my trip included the Naming Ceremony, Afrochella, and the Cape Coast Castle excursion. I stayed at the Golden Tulip, an older hotel, which offers all amenities and a wonderful breakfast included daily. The hotel also has a very nice poolside bar. I am eternally grateful for the historians/photographers/videographers that were available to record our experience. As a solo traveler, I am beyond pleased with being captured in so many wonderful moments. The lowlights of my trip included the cancellation of our trip to Kakumi, as it was scheduled on the same day as the Cape Coast visit. The day's itinerary was ambitious and the group was ultimately offered reimbursement for the missed excursion. A scheduled add-on trip to Kumasi was also canceled, as it was not prioritized or planned for properly. I was offered a refund for it, but take issue with how overpriced it was. The organizer's inconsistent presence and disposition was also a challenge, before and during the trip. Taking into consideration the stress of organizing and planning an international trip for a group, the customer service she offered was often lacking. The organizer depended heavily on a partner organization- Explore Ghana Tours- to execute the trip and it was much more welcoming and accesible. Also, while I am grateful to have met every single individual in the travel group, the group size was much too large for efficient execution, specifically when it came to dining out and transportation. Overall, I am pleased with having found an opportunity to visit Ghana at year's end, especially considering I had only just decided in October to join. Away2Africa offered the opportunity, and I'm grateful, as the trip was an amazing introduction to Accra, Ghana. However there was much to be desired in the business acumen, execution, and customer service extended by the organizer, and I could not confidently recommend its services to anyone else.

This was TRULY a trip of a lifetime. Experiencing Africa for the first time by visiting 5 different countries was truly a life changing experience. We will forever hold the memories of the people we met, our tour guides, the activities and excursions and the pure joy of being in "Mamma Africa" in our hearts forever. We will never be the same...and that's a GREAT thing. And we are already planning for our 2022 return to visit some new countries and repeat some of our favorites from our first trip. THANK YOU for making a dream a reality. What a great way to kick-off the year celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and 20th year together as a couple! Truly memorable!!

Hello Tiffanie, The Landrys made it safely back to USA. We had a memorable lifetime experience. We got to be hands on with our people in the villages, feel their energy, experience our ancestors spirit, and allow ourselves to be immersed in the culture. Oh how I love our people, my Brothers & Sisters, & their culture. Names truly have meaning & purpose. Everywhere we went, the spirit of the People was warm, inviting, & receptive. There were some things & places we are not accustomed to seeing & experiencing, but we never felt threatened or in danger at any time. I can't say the same for places I've visited in America or some other countries. We just felt safe, as if we were with Family. What an overwhelming feeling of security & comfort. Now let me convey our sentiments about Away to Africa staff: "Godsend" 1st, Ivy was a true blessing & joy. She coordinated the experiences & getting people moving, although challenging @ times, but always with a smile. Knows Ghana like the back of her hand. Always available & quick responding to needs of the group, no matter the time.. Did she ever sleep!! Most importantly, she did it with grace & such a beautiful spirit. Never ever negative, always positive, in the midst of some negativity. Godsend! Next, Courage truly exemplifies his name. Everywhere we went he made sure the places were ready to receive us & our entry was smooth without delay. Great problem solver & listener. Very calm & confident spirit. Calming soul! Godsend! Kobi(?), WOW! Can drive a bus in any condition, terrain, weather, or place. Can maneuver a bus in tight spaces, narrow roads, crowded streets, but most importantly, done with grace, calmness & a big smile. Godsend! Paul, was the 1st person to meet us @ airport. From that time on, we knew this young man was a true gentleman. Got us to breakfast and checked on us constantly. He truly made our entry into Ghana welcoming & secure, even after clearing customs, which truly was not bad at all. I appreciate the Ghanaians for being thorough upon entry into their Country. Paul is a good soul & dancer. Godsend! Rebecca, quiet, but by the end of the trip, we all wanted to hug Rebecca. Knew her role and assisted everyone. Beautiful spirit & very talented. Love her story. Godsend! So grateful to David for organizing visits to villages. Naming Ceremony was powerful & emotional. We truly felt, "AKWAABA"!!! This staff, along with the People & culture, made sure that we would have a lifetime experience, that would change & challenge us for the better as we return to our respective homes. But definitely, without hesitation or doubt, that we will return....again & again & again.........to the home of our ancestors, who gave their life, that we might live!!! Our souls are overjoyed & full. Thank you for providing an amazing experience. Please please please pass on to your staff. P.S. So sorry we missed Kakun National Park. We were so looking fwd to that experience. Along with Cape Coast, visits to villages, & Boti Falls, those were the experiences we were most excited about. Tours were great. Tour guides illustrated the history so well, we felt as if we were present @ the time. WOW WOW WOW!!! Blessings to you & all your staff and may God richly Bless Away to Africa in this New Year.
