Itinerary

Day 2 and 3
Bufo Alvarius ceremony

Toad medicine helps many people to connect with the divine power and heal from physical and mental suffering. After Bufo ceremonies many report “ego-death,” profound understanding of life, healing of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Our Bufo ceremonies are held in a group setting and surrounded by nature. Forming a bond with the team and other participants that are interested in this type of spiritual growth is a beautiful dynamic. Setting and comfort are a vital part of this experience. Feeling safe, secure and supported in such a vulnerable state is very important. We are grateful Juan David Alvarius and his team of helpers provide that for every participant.

THE LODGE El Sabanero Eco Lodge was built in 2004 using all local material. Construction time was about 18 months and it was opened in 2005 to cater to nature seekers giving them a home away from home. A private escape cloaked in serenity and embraced by natural beauty, a unique place for those with a passion for authentic experiences. The lodge is conveniently positioned just 10 minutes away from Hacienda Pinilla’s golf course and 15 minutes away from world-class surf beaches such as Playa Avellanas, Playa Negra, Playa Tamarindo.

El Sabanero never disappoints. This was my 3rd time staying with them, and it was definitely the BEST!! I attended this retreat for the plant medicine but as always, I loved the food (Donald is an amazing chef) the meditation, and the yoga. The surrounding area offers excellent walking paths. The rustic charm and lovely people make it so homey and loving. The daily shuttle to the beach makes getting to and from Tamarindo a breeze. See you all again soon, Holly

Pros and Cons and gorgeous views. Pros: the pool, the lodge and the gardens were amazing. Some beautifully designed buildings. Yoga shalla was lovely. I really like the female yoga instructors. The massage with Anna was a spiritual experience ! She is a gem. I appreciate the option for a free ride to town each day for shopping or beach. My personal preference would be to post ahead of time what type of yoga class is being offered certain days instead of showing up not knowing what kind of class it is. I would have done more yoga if I had know. Even a day ahead of time what was being offered. Cons: dirty cabins, certain parts of cabin werent cleaned the length of my stay - including parts of the bathroom which was really gross.. I know this is the tropics and we are in the jungle but how many bugs should I have to kill in my cabin each day? Not a sarcastic question. It was usually 3 a day and those centipedes are BIG ! Food was lacking. Breakfast was the same every day. Many meals lacked a decent protein source. I was expecting vegetarian meals so when fish is served best to offer a veggie alternative otherwise is just rice and salad for dinner. If the cook is off due to injury, a suitable replacement is needed. Food quality lacked when he was not cooking. Place was literally falling apart. My bathroom at home was cleaner than the lodge bathrooms. The whole place need an intense scrub and paint job. I was charging my phone at the old unused bar area and a panel of the bar fell off. The take credit card but can yet want you to pay cash. Expect to pay a good chunk more if you use credit card. This place has the potential for 4-5 stars but whole set up needs a lot of love and attention to detail.

Dear Sheila, I am sorry that you had to kill 3 bugs every day, we NEVER kill bugs, we throw them outside, they are living beings as well and we humans entered their habitats. Checking with our cleaning staff I was told that you did not want cleaning for 3 days because you wanted to sleep. On the food part of your review I need to mention that Donald, our chef, receives more great reviews than anybody else of our employees. He always serves alternatives for vegans or vegetarians. Again, I am sorry and apologize that you did not have the best experience. Pura Vida, Kurt

I Absolutely loved my time here at El Sabanero. It was the relaxing experience that i was looking for. I recommend taking advantage of the excursions and the wonderful services offered by their local colleagues such as Carmen (Past-Life Regression Therapy), Sole (Plant medicine shaman), and Ana (massage therapist) just to name a few. I appreciate the love and care that i recieved from the staff and everyone at El Sabanero. I will be back soon <3

El sabanero is an amazing place. I have been twice and both times were fantastic. The teachers are life changing, the views are stunning, the vibe is so friendly and peaceful, and the food is so good everything else will taste like cardboard- seriously. The cabins are basic but clean and comfortable. You are in nature- it's a jungle, not a hotel. There are Iguanas, scorpions, monkeys, bugs, and even some friendly dogs and cats to pet! It's a wonderful experience. 10/10 would go again.

Fantastic week at El Sabanero! Everything is in place to promote connection to oneself and relaxation. I met extraordinary people who were looking for the same thing as me. The yoga teachers are super qualified. They offer workshops in a variety of styles. Food is healthy and excellent! All promised services are easily accessible and the nearby town of Tamarindo is pleasant and safe. The Saturday morning public market is not to be missed!

My wife and I stayed at El Sabanero from August 5th to 12th of this year 2023. We had a delightful time. Owners Kurt & Harold are very accommodating and make you feel very welcome. Morning yoga with Hector was wonderful, and I appreciated how he made an effort to accommodate the different skill sets of the guests, so as a beginner I did not feel threatened, and Hector encouraged me to pursue yoga practice further. The other yoga gals for evening yoga were awesome too, every one of them. Ana the massage therapist is a keeper too, and highly recommended. Being able to sign up for excursions/tours, and a complimentary shuttle daily to the beach was really nice too. Donald the cook needs special recognition for still pulling it off with a broken arm – salute. We met some other amazing folks as guests there as well. While the place needs a little fixing up here and there, and has aged a wee bit, it still gives it a more rustic feel and more than makes up for that with it’s charm, views, people, features, community, and caring & safe environment to truly enjoy a reset in beautiful Costa Rica. Pura Vida El Sabanero!
