Fall is the best time to be in the foothills, and October's Basecamp Hike takes us up to one of Draper's most fun little landmarks: the Alien Tower.
Meet Up Time: 5:00pm
This is a moderate out-and-back of about 2.6 miles with roughly 500 feet of elevation gain, tucked into the Corner Canyon trail system above Draper. The climb is steady but approachable, so it's a great fit whether you're newer to hiking or just want a beautiful evening on the trail with good company. At the top you'll find the quirky "Alien Tower," an old survey tower that looks like it wandered in from a sci-fi movie, plus wide open views of the Salt Lake Valley, the Wasatch peaks, and Utah Lake on a clear day. Expect crisp fall air (hopefully!) and, if we time it right, some golden color along the ridge.
Plan on about 1.5 to 2 hours on the trail at a social pace. We stop for photos, we chat, and nobody gets left behind.
Afterward we're heading down to Strap Tank Brewery in Lehi for a well-earned happy hour and dinner. It's a quick drive from the trailhead and one of the more fun spots around, with a vintage motorcycle theme, a made-from-scratch American menu, hand-tossed pizzas, big salads, craft beer, and plenty of nonalcoholic and vegetarian options too. This is where the real magic of GOAT happens: swapping trail stories, meeting new adventure buddies, and settling in for good food after a good hike.
Whether you're a longtime GOAT or joining us for the first time, you're welcome here. Come for the views, stay for the community.
