Our local guide will be waiting for you at the airport to transfer you to Pola de Somiedo, in the heart of the Natural Park, where we will have our adventures in the following days.
Somiedo Natural Park is one of the last strongholds where nature is pure. Its landscapes, fauna and flora, gastronomy, and people make this corner a privileged place. It is one of the most important and best-preserved protected areas in Asturias.
In the evening, we will have our first contact with the local gastronomy during dinner, a moment that we will also use for the briefing of the next day.
Today, we will connect with the area's beautiful mountain scenery and a very important part of its ethnography and culture: the brañas —high pastures where the cattle graze in summer. And we will do it the old-fashioned way: on horseback!
Our guide will teach us the habits and behaviours of the brown bear in its natural habitat (Somiedo Natural Park) while you enjoy a walk through the most unusual and beautiful paths in our land.
We also want you to become aware of the park's values and the importance of the conservation efforts with which we collaborate. Thanks to them, the Cantabrian brown bear has managed to survive in these mountains and increased its population for the last thirty years.
Ready to walk? Today, we will follow in the footsteps of history along an ancient Roman road that, for centuries, was the way of communication between Asturias and the Castilian plateau.
We hike between high mountains until we reach the "braña", where we will sleep in the open air. Don't worry; our local guide will prepare everything for an exciting evening and night under the stars.
Our local guide is extraordinary. She is the last person to have grown up in a "Vaqueira de Alzada" family, the social group of semi-nomadic shepherds in this area of Asturias. We will be able to ask her and learn more about this way of life.
The Lake of the Valley is the largest lake in Asturias, with 24 hectares. It is located at the foot of a splendid glacial cirque, the origin of a tongue that extended down the valley.
The route to Lago del Valle is 6 kilometers (one way) of ethnography, flora, fauna, geology and landscape. The colourful, diversity and the work of the land by humans are the predominant tones of this route.
On the wooded slopes, beech and some arraclán are the dominant species. The rest are pastures and the everlasting “teito”, with which the roofs of the cabins of the same name are made.
We are now moving to the neighbouring municipality of Belmonte in search of a semi-wild herd of “asturcones”, the region's native breed of horses.
Their search will allow us to cross a landscape inhabited by wolves, who prowl the area's meadows and peaks.
Change of scenery. Today, we paddle a section of one of the main rivers of Asturias: the Nalón. It is a river of calm waters that stands out for its soft and pastoral landscapes. So we will have time to have a picnic and even take a swim.
Upon arrival, we will be rewarded in a typical Asturian inn, perfect for regaining strength before checking into our hotel.
In the afternoon, we will enjoy a scenic walk along the "Ruta de Los Miradores," overlooking the rugged coast of the Cantabrian Sea.
We did it! A few days ago, if you think about it, you were up in the high mountains hiking in bear territory, and suddenly we're at the beach. And it's surfing time!
Well, it's all coming to an end. From the hotel, it is a concise transfer to the airport. So you will indeed have time to have breakfast and pack your bags calmly :)
We hope you enjoyed this trip very much through the heart of Asturias. Are you looking forward to more? We have several extensions in Asturias: Picos de Europa, gastronomic and cultural experiences... We are ready to continue with you!
