Physical distancing in effect.

For many, you've been practicing yoga and meditation in the company of studio communities.  Covid-19 has placed us at physical distances where the solo practice of ancient times has become quite real.  We're not used to being alone and deep down we might be feeling how connection is our biological imperative.

We want for all being to be safe, healthy, and free from harm.  We can see the many ways to help.  There are also creative ways to gather, to see and be with one another within safe covid protocols.  The great outdoors really helps!

Annika and I invite you to gather together out in the landscape, with her horses, a warm fire and each other in a round of practices.  It will most likely be a new experience for us!  And yet, as practitioners, we can resurrect practices into every space and time.  Annika Voeltz, Life-Coach and certified horse-assisted therapist, with her four, formerly wild horses invite us out to their barn for a morning of learning about mindfulness from a horse’s perspective.

Horses in their natural environment are Masters of Mindfulness. They have been uniquely created to adapt to the most challenging circumstances without losing their very own identity. They have come to the human’s aid in many ways over past centuries and we believe that they have a role to play in our time that goes beyond a beloved hobby.

Horses are known for their calming effects on people. Spending time interacting with horses can draw out some of the anxiety, stress, and mental strain we might be feeling.  They sense what is going on ‘underneath the surface’ and respond accordingly. Many of Annika's clients report feeling a deep sense of appreciation for how their emotions get accepted and acknowledged by the horses.  What can we learn from horses about how we want to be in this world?

Annika Voeltz explains, “Whoever you are and whatever you are experiencing – being with horses offers you a new perspective to life. Horses communicate with your very core, so everything on the outside, whether it’s stress, distractions or the layers you are putting on to protect yourself from life, simply seem to disappear and let you focus on your priorities.”

This was a wonderfully nourishing experience. Melissa and Suniti's teachings and energy provided a good reminder of all that is important in life. I have been able to 'return to my cushion' with regularity and greater resolve...... the outcome being that I am more present in relationships and daily life. The retreat center was beautiful with stunning gardens and architecture, the delicious meals were freshly prepared (much of it grown on Stowel Lake Farm) and the other participants were a joy to get to know. I would highly recommend a retreat with Melissa and Suniti!

The essence of this experience; the practices, the farm, the people, the birds and bunnies, all are continuing to live and breath in me. The opportunity to rest in the sunny fields, help out on the farm, be fed by food and spirit, and practice sitting and moving together was transformational. Attending Spirit of Zen with Melissa and Suniti is a gift.

Melissa and Suniti created a great container in which to retreat, grow and learn. Thoughtful, supportive, challenging. I unreservedly recommend them if you're considering going on a future retreat.

This is my second time at Stowel Lake Farm Retreat with Melissa. The food is truly a highlight of staying at the Farm. The grounds are gorgeous and tranquil, the accommodations warm and comfy, and there is plenty of time and space to be alone. This retreat is the perfect balance between silent meditation, contemplation and somatic movement to embody practice and regulate the body. Really value attention to fostering an inclusive, safe community. Evening Dharma talks are provocative. Perfect week of attention to mind, body and spirit under the guidance of two fabulous teachers.

Had such a beautiful experience on this retreat with Brian and Melissa. It was a true vacation for the mind, body, and spirit. Friendship is the whole practice. Much gratitude to all of you, and especially to Brian, Melissa, and Jenn.

I’m so grateful to Melissa for the thoughtful and powerful way she leads retreats, meditation, and movement practice. I particularly appreciate her trauma-informed approach to yoga. I’ve learned so much from her and I look forward to what the future will bring. I treasure Melissa as a wonderful and highly skilled teacher, chaplain, and leader.
