About this trip

This trip to Bénin & Togo--and most specifically the former kingdom of Dahomey will be one of the biggest and most memorable Haitian Nomad trips to date. This is the land our ancestors ruled as kings and queens, this is where the real Dahomey Amazonians woman warriors (seen in Black panther) protected the king and defended their kingdom.

Haitians particularly are for the most part descendants of this land, it is the spirit of those ancestors that inspired them to fight the evils of colonization and it is those same women warriors who taught them their military tactics. You'll embark on an unforgettable journey through Benin and then cross into togo and re-discover every fiber of your existence.

Most of the slaves from Benin were imported to South Carolina (36%), Virginia (23%), Gulf Coast (28%) and Florida (9,8%) so The people will seem familiar, as will the food and the music, the religions and traditions. Even more subtle distinctions, like mannerisms, sayings and body language, will be familiar to you.

Who is this trip for?

This is for you if you easily adjust in social settings, you go with the flow and make the most of any situations, you're comfortable "trooping it" if needs be,  and you fit in easily everywhere you go and make the best of situations.

You really want to dig deeper into your roots and you're open minded to learn about the true voodoo instead of what western media has tried to make us believe.

This trip is NOT for you if:

-If you cannot get used to unexpected changes, getting in small boats, stepping outside of your comfort zone in countries where american/western standards aren't the norm and infrastructure is lacking.

-You tend to complain a lot and don't have patience.

-You only eat American food and have a very particular diet

-You expect western style accommodations and have issues adjusting to last minute changes or curveballs.

-Covid19 Vaccine required on all Haitian Nomad trips

-Yellow Fever vaccination is required for this trip. (There is currently a shortage of this vaccine in the U.S. with some availability at Passporthealth locations and other travel clinics so plan accordingly).

This was a once in a lifetime trip with a business who made it priceless. The guidance and expertise of Toi and Rames was incomparable. As a history teacher who also has traveled with students, both are guides who I would not hesitate to leave them in their expert hands! I am currently deciding what trip I want to take next year. Haitian Nomads is a top-notch company that I eagerly recommend to everyone I come in contact with!

This was my first trip with Haitian Nomad and overall the trip was amazing! I enjoyed the trip primarily because everything was already planned. I was told what time to be ready for the day's activities and that's what I did. There was so much to see in Vietnam, that we didn't scratch the surface and I wish I could have seen a little more, BUT what vacations are ever long enough!?!? Now do not get me wrong we travelled from North to South Vietnam in 8-9 days. A lot was done, but I think I am bummed because I did not have enough time to visit the tailor and that was because I chose a massage instead, lol. Next time!! Also, the pictures and videos that I shared with my friends back home sparked some excitement in them that we are discussing booking a future trip with Haitian Nomad. They thought I was having too much fun...and I was!!!! I conquered some fears, met great people that I've already claimed as my friends and I'm excited for the next trip with Richard and/or his team. Call me Ms. International! See you soon Riiiichard!

This trip was nothing short of amazing. Great food choices and activities. Hoi An is a great city to spend time in and yes, you can get a brand new tailor-made wardrobe made for you with a quick turnaround. You should 100% book this trip if it is offered in 2024!

This is my 2nd trip with Haitian Nomad and I must say it exceeds my expectations. This one we had more free time which was good and bad. Bad- I felt like it left the group divided some. And broke the cohesiveness. And for those that came alone if they knew no one it can make it hard for them during free time. Luckily the people who came solo either knew others or traveled international before so they were ok. But someone new to travel may feel I excluded . I wish the trip was longer in some of the cities but I know it’s not always affordable or make sense with the time. There is so much to see in each city and each was sooo different. I would have liked to see some of the museums in Vietnam. Good- at the same time free time was good because it allowed everyone to spend time with the people the came with. Also allowed them to explore the cities and dive into more of the culture and vibe of the city. The trip overall was amazing. I would have liked to see the floating martlet. I feel in da Nang we could’ve seen more bc people wanted to get items made and I don’t think time allowed them to do it all. The food was amazing especially on the boat in hap long bay. The food was amazing everywhere . So fresh. The cooking class was fun and different. The most important thing was Richard taking his time to go with me to the orphanage I was born in Ho Chi Minh. I had told him even if we didn’t have time I was ok with that bc even being in Vietnam was a blessing to me. But we went and it was a true experience. He said no matter what he was gonna make sure we went by there and we got way more than what we bargained for. I tell everyone that Haitian Nomad trips are an experience not just a vacation. It is a way to dive into another country and see more than what is on TV . Cant wait for the next one!

I have been traveling with Haitian Nomad since 2016. Within these 4 years they have built themselves a very solid reputation. I have recommended friends who came back with praising reviews. Originally centered on Haiti, they now have a global imprint with well-curated trips to discover the beauty and history of some dope locations. On Richard's trips, careful consideration is always taken for our security as well as our health. We see that illustrated even more in 2020 as we deal with the current pandemic. On our most recent trip, we made sure to be in complete compliance with both the US and Senegal by getting tested for COVID-19 before, during and after our trip. All of us left and came with back with negative results. As a healthcare provider, I felt in trusted hands the whole time and also did not feel that our group was compromising the health of the country we were visiting. The itineraries usually includes a mix of activity and relaxation (sometimes hardcore rejoicing at night lol). The best part is you always leave Richard's trips with unique travel experiences as well as lifelong friendships.

Short Version: Book with him ASAP I cannot recommend the Haitian Nomad enough!! My first trip, we'd returned from Cuba and after the experience, I was thoroughly impressed with Richard's trip. His trips are extremely well planned and a lot of thought and effort was put into ensuring everyone is having the time of their life. Richard pays attention to all the little details, is very organized, and adds a personal touch to the experience that you're not likely to get anywhere else. During our trip to Cuba, Richard organized a wonderful home-cooked rooftop dinner in the city of Trinidad and it was such a fun, unique experience. He made sure to take us around to the sights and helped us if we needed anything while on the trip. Prior to the trip, Richard provided us with all the necessary information leading up to the trip and gave us tips and suggestions on what to expect and other things to do as well. He is also open to feedback on how his service can be improved so he gets an A in customer service from me. Overall, it was the perfect trip and I couldn't have asked for more. So far I've been on about 5 or 6 trips (maybe more) and it exceeds expectations every time!
