When Is the Best Time to Dive in Baja?

Every season brings something special to Baja California Sur. Winter offers opportunities to encounter migrating whales, while spring and summer bring seasonal aggregations of mobula rays and exciting shark encounters. As autumn arrives, the action continues with bait balls and marlin hunting offshore, while warmer waters in summer and autumn give way to cooler temperatures in winter, bringing different marine life and unique underwater experiences throughout the year.

We're often asked, “When is the best time to dive in Baja?” The answer depends on what you want to see! That's why we've created our Baja Marine Wildlife Calendar, based on our own experiences, explorations and encounters, to help you plan your trip around the species you're most excited to discover. We regularly update it with new sightings and observations to help you make the most of your adventure.

The best part? You don't have to wait for a particular season to experience Baja's magic. The next two destinations are fantastic year-round, offering incredible diving and marine life encounters whenever you choose to visit.

Just be warned: once you've experienced the wonders of Baja, you'll already be planning your return!

Cabo Pulmo – A Conservation Success Story

Discover one of the most extraordinary marine conservation success stories in the world at Cabo Pulmo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site and one of the healthiest reef systems in the Baja California Peninsula. Once heavily overfished, the local families of Cabo Pulmo made the remarkable decision to protect their ocean by establishing a no-take marine reserve in 1995. Their efforts transformed the area, with fish biomass increasing by approximately 400% within the first decade. Today, Cabo Pulmo stands as an inspiring example of what marine conservation can achieve.

The park is home to an incredible diversity of marine life, with more than 300 fish species inhabiting its ancient reef system, believed to be around 20,000 years old. Expect spectacular encounters with enormous schools of jacks and snapper, bull sharks, sea turtles, giant groupers and countless colourful reef species.

Beyond the diving, Cabo Pulmo offers a completely different side of Baja: a peaceful, remote and unspoiled coastal community surrounded by dramatic desert landscapes, pristine beaches and spectacular sunsets. It's the perfect destination for anyone looking to experience world-class diving while supporting responsible, conservation-focused tourism.

Your Cabo Pulmo Package

  • Duration: 2 nights

  • Diving: 2 days of two-tank boat diving

  • Price: $1,350 USD per person

Experience the incredible results of marine conservation and dive one of Baja's true underwater treasures.

The experience changes with the seasons. During winter, La Paz offers the opportunity to snorkel with whale sharks (subject to seasonal sightings and regulations), alongside encounters with the resident sealions.

For the rest of the year, enjoy a two-tank dive exploring the area's beautiful reefs and underwater landscapes, with the chance to dive alongside the curious and playful sea lions. Whatever the season, La Paz is a fantastic addition to any Baja adventure.

Mako & Blue Shark Safari – Cabo San Lucas

For those looking for something truly extraordinary, join us on a multi-day Mako & Blue Shark Safari in the waters off Cabo San Lucas. These two magnificent pelagic species are among the ocean's most fascinating predators and have become favourites of underwater photographers and shark enthusiasts around the world.

In recent years, Cabo has established itself as an exceptional destination for encounters with these elusive animals, thanks to its productive offshore waters, relatively short boat journeys and often excellent visibility.

This is a snorkelling and freediving expedition that offers the opportunity to encounter these incredible sharks in their natural environment, without the use of cages. Come face to face with the shortfin mako, the fastest shark in the ocean, and the elegant, inquisitive blue shark, renowned for its striking appearance and photogenic nature. Every encounter is different, and sharing the water with these remarkable animals is an experience that will stay with you long after you've returned to shore.

Grey Whale Encounters – López Mateos, Magdalena Bay

Prepare for one of the most magical wildlife experiences Baja has to offer. Every winter, the Pacific grey whales migrate thousands of miles to the sheltered lagoons of Magdalena Bay, arriving in the waters around López Mateos to give birth and raise their calves. Here, you have the extraordinary opportunity to encounter these gentle giants at remarkably close range. Imagine sitting quietly on the boat as a curious grey whale surfaces just inches away, lifting its enormous barnacle-covered head above the water to take a closer look. Mothers are even known to bring their young calves to the surface, creating truly unforgettable encounters. These interactions are difficult to put into words and offer a rare glimpse into the fascinating relationship between these magnificent animals and the local community.

But there's much more to explore beyond the whales. We'll venture through the beautiful mangrove channels, cruise along pristine coastlines and explore the spectacular desert sand dunes, home to local wildlife including coyotes and a variety of bird species. Magdalena Bay is one of Baja's most important wildlife sanctuaries, and its incredible biodiversity makes every boat journey an adventure in itself. It's a chance to experience a wilder, more remote side of Baja, where nature takes centre stage and time seems to slow down.

Your Grey Whale Package

  • Duration: 3 nights

  • Activities: 2 days of grey whale watching

  • Additional experiences: Mangrove exploration, coastal wildlife and desert sand dunes

  • Price: $1,500 USD per person

Striped Marlin & Sardine Run – Magdalena Bay

Every autumn, enormous schools of sardines gather in the waters off Magdalena Bay, attracting one of the ocean's most incredible predators: the striped marlin. These powerful, highly agile hunters work together to herd vast bait balls towards the surface before launching coordinated attacks at astonishing speed. It's one of Baja's most spectacular wildlife encounters – a hidden sardine run that rivals some of the world's best marine spectacles.

Imagine slipping into the water as dozens of striped marlin surround a bait ball, darting in from every direction as they hunt alongside sea lions and other marine predators. With luck, you could find yourself watching 30 or more marlin working together in the same feeding frenzy. It's an extraordinary display of speed, coordination and raw ocean power.

Join Team Ninja on a special expedition to explore the wild waters of Bahía Magdalena. We'll spend our days offshore searching for active bait balls, getting into the water to freedive, swim and snorkel alongside the action. The Accommodation

Accommodation varies depending on the destinations and experiences included in your itinerary, but we always aim to find comfortable, welcoming places that complement each location.

In Cabo San Lucas, this may mean staying in quality 4-star hotels with swimming pools in the Marina area, while our Mobula Ray adventures feature beautiful private beachfront villas, just steps from the Sea of Cortez.

In some of Baja's smaller, more remote communities – such as Magdalena Bay, López Mateos and Cabo Pulmo – accommodation is generally simpler and more rustic, offering a more authentic taste of local life.

Wherever we stay, we'll make sure you have a comfortable place to relax and recharge between days of adventure. Accommodation is generally based on twin-share rooms, with a single supplement available for an additional chargefor those who prefer their own room.

How to get there

The nearest airport is Los Cabos International Airport (airport code SJD).  Los Cabos International is also known as San Jose del Cabo International Airport by some airlines.

We recommend arriving a day early to give you some time to relax and a little padding in case of any travel delays. Easy direct flights can be found from many cities in the US and Mexico. From the US flights are quite cheap – especially from the west coast and southwest US.

From Europe flights usually include a layover in the southwest US or Mexico City. If transiting through the US please check in advance to see if you will need a US transit visa.

Our reservations team can help set up a transfer from the airport to the Dive Ninja HQ for you.  Los Cabos airport is serviced daily with domestic & international flights.
