After breakfast we'll have a City Tour. The tour goes through the street markets rich in handicrafts, weavings and witchcraft items, followed by a visit to the colonial section of the city, San Francisco Church, Gold Museum, Murillo Square, and then a visit to the lookout point "Mirador de Killi Killi"; and the outdoor replica of Tiwanaku temple. We will enjoy lunch and continue our exploration of La Paz visiting the Museo Nacional de Etnografía y Folklore then we will ride by cable car, “Teleférico”, to discover an excellent panoramic view of the city of La Paz.

After breakfast in the hotel, we will have a transfer to the airport for our 10:00 am flight to Sucre, arriving around 11:00 am and transferring to our hotel. From here we will have an Afternoon City Tour, with lunch included. Sucre (UNESCO World Heritage Site) http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/566, is the capital of Bolivia; this charming colonial city lies at the head of the valley at 2,700 meters (8,900 feet) high. Our tour includes a visit to the “Casa de la Libertad”, where the Act of Independence of Bolivia was signed in 1825; Bolivar Park, to see examples of the aristocratic tradition in Sucre with small replicas of the Eiffel Tower and the Arc of Triumph of Paris; the church and museum of La Recoleta, and the museum of Indian Textiles ASUR. Then we will return to our hotel for dinner.

Early this morning we will board our private transfer, beginning in the valley, and make our way up to the Pilcomayo river (3-hour drive approx.) and see Puente Arce (a suspension bridge used in the past). We will then continue up to the highlands, and at 4,060 meters (13,320 feet), we reach the famous colonial mining city of Potosi (UNESCO World Heritage Site), http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/420. After our lunch, we will have an Afternoon City Tour of Potosí. Visiting Potosí is a journey back in time through traditional colonial streets and the artisan market; the famous Mint House, San Francisco church and the front of San Lorenzo church that has one of the greatest examples of stone carvings of the baroque-mestizo style.

After breakfast in the hotel we will continue our journey to Uyuni.  Today is an amazing trip starting in Potosí passing through great branches of the Andes range, with a multitude of colors, natural erosion and cactus, near the villages of Chaquilla and Tika Tika, and the famous Pulacayo tin mine. Our 3 to 4- hour trip today ends in the village of Uyuni, once a large train maintenance and workshop center, now growing related to tourism of the Uyuni salt flats and the rest of the region. We will arrive and check into the Palacio de Sal Hotel, with walls and ceilings made with salt. The purpose of this special construction is to be in balance with nature and the surrounding landscape. Remainder of afternoon free at leisure until we meet for dinner.

Today we will have a Full Day excursion to the Uyuni Salt Flats, the world’s largest, covering an area of 10,582 square kilometers (4,086 square miles), which is roughly 100 times the size of the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah in the United States. Our visit will include the Train Cemetery where the remains of 19th and 20th century steam locomotives now make their home. We will stop in Colchani, the best place to observe the methods of salt extraction, and continuing to Incahuasi Island, an oasis with a unique and isolated ecosystem that is populated by giant cactus up to 10 meters tall. We head north to visit the pre-Columbian Pucara de Ayque fort and the nearby chullpares on the foothills of the Thunupa volcano. Then we return to Uyuni, time for dinner (not included) and then to the airport for our 8:00 pm flight back to La Paz with transfer to our hotel.

Early departure around 5:30 am. We will have a shuttle of a little more than 2 hours to the pier to board our catamaran in time to enjoy our breakfast onboard and then sail until we reach Isla del Sol. Here we will walk up 204 steps for a fantastic view of the lake and the Andes range. We will visit a local farm, enjoy a muña tea (Minthostachys mollis) and witness a local blessing ceremony, visiting the local museum and returning to our catamaran in time for lunch. Then we sail to the beautiful town of Copacabana where we will visit the church and the colorful local market. From here we will take our van to the border, process Immigration leaving Bolivia, walk across the bridge and legalize our documents with the Peruvian authorities.  Then we can board our new van and take our 2½ hour ride to Puno. Check in at the hotel and relax until time for dinner.

After breakfast, we will have a Day Trip on Lake Titicaca to the Uros and Taquile Islands. We will enjoy an extraordinary journey across the world's highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca, with a surface elevation of 3,812 meters (12,507 feet) above sea level. The lake has 27 rivers flowing into it, and is the largest lake in South America, and is said to be the birthplace of the Incas. We will travel to legendary places where time seems to have stood still. The first stop will be the Uros floating islands. These are a peculiar grouping of around 40 small islands made totally of totora, a natural reed that grows around the lake. Legend says that the Uros people migrated from the Amazon to the area, where they were oppressed by the locals and unable to create their own settlements, so they built the reed islands which could be moved when needed. The cheerful inhabitants will invite you to get to know their traditional lifestyle and customs. We will continue our voyage across the placid waters of the lake until arriving to the picturesque Taquile Island, a peaceful place where old Quechua traditions live in perfect balance with modernity. Discover a landscape distinct from the other islands thanks to the Incan terraces filled with local flowers and crops. The rich colors of the clothing worn by the local inhabitants will amaze you; admire their beautiful hand-made fabrics. Most importantly, enjoy the unbelievable hospitality of the islanders, known as Taquileños, who will make your visit to the island a memorable one. Before making your way back to Puno, you will have lunch at a local home.

This morning we will have a transfer to the airport in time for our 12:50 pm flight to Cusco (1 hour approx.) Then we will have an Afternoon City Tour of Cusco. Nestled in the Andes, Cusco a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most fascinating places in the Americas, which never fails to surprise visitors with its mystery-filled history. With its excellent hotels and restaurants, this city is full of amazing places to see. A product of the fusion of Inca and Hispanic culture, Cusco has been declared a World Heritage Site. We can feel the magic of the impressive legacy of Inca culture, as we walk through its streets and its fascinating stone passages, as we visit its colonial mansions built over the remains of Inca structures, and as we explore its imposing fortresses and majestic citadels. We will begin our tour as you enjoy the best view of the city of Cusco from atop Cerro Pukamoqo (Red Peak), a natural scenic overlook from which the outstretched arms of Cristo Blanco, a massive white statue of Christ, embrace the city in a benevolent gesture. We will then visit the nearby Fortaleza de Sacsayhuamán (Fortress of Sacsayhuamán), a colossal structure of enormous stones, carved and fitted together with incredible precision. As we return to the lower part of the city, we will stop off at the Mercado de San Pedro (Market of St. Peter), which being the city’s main street market, will give you an opportunity to get to know the products of Cusco, overwhelming you with the sights, aromas, tastes, and colors of the region. Just a few blocks away, you will discover one of the most impressive buildings of Incan Cusco: the Korikancha (the Golden Temple) - a temple dedicated to the worship of the Sun God, whose interior walls were said to have been covered in gold. We will complete the day with a stroll through the Cusco Plaza de Armas (Main Square), where we will visit the Cathedral and admire its exquisite vestibules and priceless paintings from the Cusco School of the 17th and 18th centuries. Then we will head to our hotel where you will have free time for dinner (not included).
Note: Because of limited space on the train, on our way to Machu Picchu travelers are only allowed to bring one backpack (or similar) + 1 carry on per person on the train. Please pack wisely for the next two nights. Don’t forget your passport, money, camera, charger, sunglasses, mosquito repellent, water bottle and clothes for three days. The rest of the luggage will be stored at the hotel for when we return on the 26th.
