7 Days Trekking | 2 Hotel Nights | Tanzania
Climb Africa's highest mountain via the Machame Route, one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic and varied trails. This nine-day journey includes seven days on the mountain, with a hotel stay before and after the climb. Known for its dramatic landscapes and challenging terrain, Machame offers a rewarding approach to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
Beginning on Kilimanjaro's southwestern slopes, the trail ascends through dense tropical rainforest before emerging onto the Shira Plateau, where expansive views of Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape unfold. The journey continues beneath the Southern Ice Field, across the Barranco Valley and toward the summit, with each stage revealing a different side of the mountain.
The seven-day itinerary incorporates a gradual acclimatization approach, including an ascent to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp and an additional night at Karanga Camp. Supported by an experienced mountain crew, the climb combines wilderness camping, varied hiking terrain and a demanding summit ascent.
Choose this journey if you want a scenic and physically engaging Kilimanjaro climb, with varied landscapes, wilderness camping and a route that offers opportunities for acclimatization along the way.
We recommend the seven-day Machame itinerary over the shorter six-day option because the additional night at Karanga Camp provides more time to adjust to altitude before the final ascent. The route also follows a climb-high, sleep-low approach, particularly between Lava Tower and Barranco Camp, which supports the acclimatization process.
Unlike Marangu, Machame uses different ascent and descent trails, offering greater landscape variety throughout the journey. Its steeper sections, including the Barranco Wall, make it better suited to travelers who are comfortable with challenging hikes and uneven mountain terrain.

Your climb begins at Machame Gate, where your guides complete the park formalities before leading you into Kilimanjaro's dense tropical rainforest.
The trail winds steadily uphill through towering trees, lush vegetation and moss-covered forest, with opportunities to spot colobus monkeys and other wildlife along the way. As the altitude increases, the forest gradually begins to thin before reaching Machame Camp, your first overnight stop on the mountain.

Overnight: Machame Camp
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs steeply through a landscape of giant heathers and rocky ridges before opening onto Kilimanjaro's high-altitude moorland.
As you ascend, the views become increasingly expansive, with the Shira Plateau stretching across the western slopes of the mountain and Kibo rising in the distance. Continue across the rocky terrain toward Shira Camp, where you will spend the night surrounded by sweeping mountain views.
Approx. 5 km | 4–6 hours | Overnight at 3,750 m

Overnight: Shira Camp
Today is an important acclimatization day as the trail ascends toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation at approximately 4,600 metres.
The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you climb into the alpine desert, with dramatic views of Kilimanjaro's upper slopes and surrounding valleys. After reaching Lava Tower, descend into the Barranco Valley, where giant groundsels and other unusual alpine plants create a striking contrast against the rugged mountain terrain.
Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, where you will spend the night at a lower elevation than the day's highest point.
Approx. 10 km | 6–8 hours | Overnight at 3,900 m

Overnight: Barranco Camp
Begin the morning with one of Machame's most distinctive challenges: the ascent of the Barranco Wall.
Although the wall appears intimidating from below, the route follows a series of rocky ledges and scrambling sections that your guides will help you navigate. Reaching the top rewards you with expansive views across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Continue through a landscape of ridges and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley and making the final climb toward Karanga Camp.
The shorter trekking day provides additional time to rest and acclimatize before continuing toward the higher elevations.
Approx. 5 km | 4–5 hours | Overnight at 4,000 m
Meals: Full Board
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Continue upward through the alpine desert, where vegetation becomes sparse and the mountain's rugged upper slopes dominate the landscape.
The trail climbs steadily toward Barafu Camp, your final overnight stop before the summit attempt. From here, the surrounding ridges and distant peaks reveal the scale of the climb ahead.
After arriving at camp, enjoy an early meal and a briefing with your mountain guides before resting in preparation for the demanding ascent toward Uhuru Peak.
Approx. 4 km | 3–4 hours | Overnight at 4,640 m
Meals: Full Board
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Your summit attempt begins around midnight, climbing slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim.
The ascent is physically demanding, with steep scree slopes, cold temperatures and the effects of high altitude making every step more challenging. As dawn approaches, the surrounding landscape begins to emerge, revealing views across Kilimanjaro's glaciers and volcanic crater.
Subject to weather, conditions and your guide's assessment, continue from Stella Point toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres.
After time at the summit, begin the long descent past Barafu Camp and continue toward Millennium Camp, where you will spend your final night on the mountain.
Approx. 15 km | 10–14 hours | Summit at 5,895 m | Overnight at Millennium Camp, approximately 3,820 m
Meals: Full Board
Overnight: Millennium Camp
Enjoy breakfast before beginning your final descent through Kilimanjaro's changing vegetation zones.
The trail leads downward into the rainforest, where the warmer temperatures and lush surroundings mark a welcome return to lower elevations. Continue toward Mweka Gate, where you will complete the park exit formalities and receive your summit certificate if eligible.
Transfer back to your hotel for a hot shower, a comfortable bed and an evening to celebrate the journey.
Approx. 12 km | 3–4 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
