This advanced training takes tour guides and tour directors beyond Boston’s usual landmarks and into the neighborhoods, hidden corners, forgotten history, colorful characters, and local legends that make this city such an incredible place to tell stories.

But this training has another purpose: building your commentary toolbox.

Every experienced guide knows the moment. Traffic comes to a standstill. The restaurant isn’t ready. Waiting on multiple groups to arrive.

Now what?

We’ll teach you how to build a collection of flexible stories, anecdotes, local trivia, legends, and “anytime commentary” that you can pull out when you need to fill five minutes—or fifty.

You'll learn how to:

• Explore lesser-visited neighborhoods and areas of Boston that can add depth to any itinerary

• Discover fascinating stories, folklore, legends, scandals, and characters from Boston’s past

• Build a library of great “back-pocket stories” you can use almost anywhere

• Develop filler commentary for traffic delays, early arrivals, unexpected downtime, and itinerary changes

• Connect stories to different parts of the city instead of relying on a memorized script

• Turn seemingly ordinary streets, buildings, and neighborhoods into opportunities for storytelling

• Become more comfortable going off script when the tour inevitably doesn’t go according to plan

This isn’t Boston 101.

It’s about knowing the city well enough that when the itinerary changes, the traffic stops, or something completely unexpected happens, you still have a story to tell.

We’ll explore the elegant streets of Back Bay, the Public Garden, and Beacon Hill with a guide’s eye—looking beyond the famous landmarks to uncover the unusual characters, forgotten stories, local legends, architectural quirks, and little details that most visitors walk right past.

From the creation of Back Bay on land that was once underwater to the personalities who lived behind Beacon Hill’s beautiful doors, we’ll dig into the stories that give these neighborhoods their character. We’ll uncover secrets in the Public Garden, discover unusual pieces of Boston history, talk architecture and old Boston society, and find those wonderfully random stories that make students suddenly look up from their phones and say, “Wait…WHAT?” We finish off with the West End - we all visit it, but do we know what to say?

More importantly, we'll talk about how to use these stories on tour—whether you're walking through the neighborhood, passing it on a motor coach, filling unexpected downtime, or simply need a great back-pocket story when the itinerary goes sideways.

Day Two is all about getting off the traditional Boston tour route and discovering three very different sides of the city.

We’ll begin in the South End, one of Boston’s most beautiful—and surprisingly overlooked—neighborhoods. Beyond its famous brownstones and tree-lined streets, we'll uncover stories of change, architecture, culture, and the people who helped shape this fascinating corner of Boston. It’s the kind of neighborhood most groups drive right past…and exactly the kind of place where a great guide can find incredible material.

Then we're heading across the river to Harvard Square—but this is NOT a Harvard tour. Instead, we'll explore the “Other Than Harvard” side of the Square: the characters, businesses, music, counterculture, oddities, local institutions, and unexpected stories that have surrounded America's most famous university for generations. Because there’s a whole lot more to Harvard Square than Harvard.

Finally, we'll head somewhere many Boston visitors never go at all: East Boston.

Eastie has been a gateway to Boston for generations, shaped by waves of immigrants who brought their cultures, traditions, ambitions—and thankfully, their food—with them. We'll explore stories of immigration, aviation, shipbuilding, neighborhood change, and the communities that transformed East Boston, while discovering some fantastic places to eat along the way. Also, great local food stops to feed your groups!

Throughout the day we'll focus on the fascinating anecdotes, local characters, neighborhood history, food stories, and unexpected bits of Boston that can rescue you when you suddenly have time to fill.

Three neighborhoods. Three completely different personalities. And a whole lot of Boston most visitors never get to see.
